Transitioning FF - Opera - niggles ....
Certain websites have been causing me progressively more issues when
using FF (2.0.0.20). I noted in another thread that someone was running Opera 10.63 so I installed that, and configured it to hopefully do my bidding. Unfortunately, there are two areas where I cannot for the life of me get it to replicate the functionality I have with FF: 1. When I go to log on to certain sites, FF offers a drop-down selection of my logon usernames if I click in the empty username box. Not just autocomplete (although it does that too) - a dropdown list. Not Opera - I have to type in the full username each time. 2. Remembering visited links - I use these as a marker to show where I am up to in (say) browsing a category in fleabay. With FF that marker is there next time I visit. WIth Opera, it dies with the session. Nothing at the Opera site helped, nor did "about: config" in the address bar - that really only gave the Tools - Preferences parameters via a different front-end. Can anyone familiar with the inner workings of Opera point me in the right direction? |

As both the FF and Opera versions are "obsolete" they also tend to attract nothing but sneers . I have a standing query in the FF forum about how to DELETE a parameter which was inserted into the about:config page in 2.0.0.20 with a typo, and no responses. I figure that this is a fairly basic feature that most Opera immigrants would have experienced in their previous browser-of-choice and would have come to grips with. I also value the fact that the denizens of this n/g are in the same time warp as me. |

I don't know if it can conveniently set for any of several easily selected names, but there is a form setting in the preferences that lets you fill in stuff, then when logging into a site, you can use the key button just right of the forward/backward navigation buttons. I imagine it fills in the details needed, and may even use multiple identities, but I don't know. I never use it. Tedious though it is, I just let it remember my name for the duration of a session, and never remember any passwords. I find there is only one way to maintain that habit, and that's to maintain it. |

Maybe your version has improved upon this? You can r-click the box and then Insert Personal or Insert Note, or you can place your cursor inside the box and then hit the down arrow. Opera autocompletes your selection. BTW, I have found opera.general to be a very helpful newsgroup. - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email. |

"the FF forum" Which forum is that? I don't find your nick in mozilla.support.firefox at the news.mozilla.org news-server. I've never gotten much of anything useful out of the usenet firefox forums, or any on-line firefox / mozilla forums. All I know is that I get white-line banding on bitmapped images when I scroll web pages up and down when using firefox 3, and I'm not the only one to see that. I've also tried the Avant browser and I see the same thing. That's mostly why I stick to using firefox 2.0.0.20, and use Opera 11.61 for very occasional use. The problem with Opera and Windows-98 (that impacts me) is in terms of Java. Which is that Opera version 10.something (and higher) requires the use of the "next generation" of Java plugin, and this next-gen plugin for the JRE doesn't work on win-98 (even with kernelEx). |

In FF2 if I type (or mis-type) a login username into say Yahoo mail, in subsequent sessions if I click into the empty login username box it will provide a drop-down showing all previous entries, including the mis-typed ones (which I can fortunately select and delete in the list). Not passwords, or the form-filling that Opera10 has under Tools-Prefs-Forms. There, if Tedious though it is, I just let it remember my name for the duration of a session, and never remember any passwords. I find there is only one way to maintain that habit, and that's to maintain it. I never let FF or anything else remember my passwords (unless the app does it by stealth) with the exception of a couple of benign forums where I use autologon. |

I don't find your nick in mozilla.support.firefox at the news.mozilla.org news-server. I can't find it from this machine. I just went looking for it but www.mozilla.org has morphed plenty since I last went there (probably a year back) but back then there was a (community?) forum for asking support questions, and there was also a link to unanswered questions. About a month after posting it, I found it in there about 500 down from the latest post. Anyway; Open 'about:config'. Select the offending preference-entry in the list. In the context-menu (pulled up by right-clicking) select 'Reset'. Quit and then relaunch Firefox and verify that the entry have disappeared from the 'about:config' preferences-list. It was causing repeated lockups. A complete remove/reg-clean/reinstall removed the corrupted key, although the lockups remain. One of the main reasons I am looking at Opera ... I also value the fact that the denizens of this n/g are in the same time warp as me. Hmm.., that makes me feel ... Warped? |
