Can I use my pictures to come up as a slide show and as a screen saver?

Every time i save a picture from my e-mail i cant view it. or get it to come up. this is something new. all my other previously saved pictures whether saved from e-mail or scanned show up but everything else is blank. i get a "choose what program youd like to open this with".

When I try to change the font, size or spacing of my icons, The hourglass pointer appears for several minutes but no change. Then when I move the mouse again the hourglass is back. I have windows 98 and every time I turn off my computer, the time/date becomes delayed. I have adjusted it each time i turn on the computer and the time/date remain accurate whent he computer is on , but not when I turn it off. Any advice? Thanks
