Windows 98 fails to shut down consistently by
Adrian
My Windows 98 computer fails to shut down properly
about half the time. Because of this I cannot use
the troubleshooting windows 98 wizard (it assumes
the computer always shuts down or never shuts down)
to isolate the problem.
When it fails to shut down, the screen displays the
message saying...

After running a program that included 3-D graphics, Direct X9, and hardware
acceleration, when I returned to the Windows desktop, I discovered that my
display settings had been changed drastically. The print and icons are now
so large that I can barely navigate to the Display icon in the Control...

DOS Reset of Windows 98 Display by
Aegnon
Because I cannot appear to fix a oversized display problem from within
Windows 98 itself, is it possible to reset the display from DOS?

PC freezing for short periods when browsing - Long - sorry. by

I'm not sure if this is the correct newsgroup, but here we go.
My system tends to seize/freeze for short periods whilst browsing the net
(doesn't happen off the net at all, even when displaying avi files). Certain
sites cause the seizing more than others,...

password by
ajcastro
Is there a way, in windows 98, to set a password so others can't use the
computer? I set a password, but all you have to do is hit cancel to bypass
it, and I don't want that. I want a way to refuse other users. Thanks.

I/O properties by
akimboss
In my Control Panel, System Properties, Device Mgr., Computer Properties,
View Resources: I/O .....
I see that all resources are filled up to FFF6, (I think full) with a lot
of "alias" hardware entries which I believe are useless and are slowing
things down.
HOW CAN I DELETE THESE "alias"...

new windows open very slowly by
Al M
Performance on my laptop (windows 98 SE) has degraded over
the last year to the point that now when attempting to
open new windows, there will be a pause of up to 10
seconds before the new window begins to open. I attempted
to run defrag and after numerous issues with it hanging at
1%, managed to...

Going Faster! by
Alan
Is it my imagination or is my PC loading software considerably faster than
it was? Yesterday, mid-afternoon in UK, McAfee downloaded an update, which
wasn't its normal weekly update and ever since then start-up etc just flies
through. So fast in fact that I checked to see if the AVG is still...

VCACHE Mod for extra RAM by
Alan
Having had one failure of trying to do this, I am taking this stage by stage
this time round.
I modified VCACHE using the edit function in MSCONFIG for the system.ini.
The change worked but when I go back in and read it, just before the
statement MaxFileCache=512000 there is now a graphic like a...
