I can not look at and pictures like jpg or tif. i click on the file and the picture does not show

I have an inbuilt mic' in my NEC monitor, when I am in messenger and test it I get a reading. I am on win 98, can I test the mic and get it to play back through the speakers so I know it is working, which is the best function to do this with. Cheers Steve.
