When I open my display menu I only have 2 colors,2 and 16, I used to have many more, when I re-installed my windows they left, where do I get them

Help. My windows become inactive for no apparent reason. Also, it minimizes any programs that I may be running (again for no reason). This seems to have happened after I ran Windows update. Any ideas on how to make it stop doing this?
