My old hard drive crapped out, and I bought a new one today. During fdisk, it says there are no partitions set up. When I try to setup a primary dos partition it says there is not enough space. What do I do?

When I type anything in Internet Explorer, Word, etc all of the windows minimize and sometimes Windows Explorer opens. This doesn't seem to happen in DOS mode. Any thoughts?
