Win98banter

Need software to setup home network

I have a desktop computer with Win98 and a laptop with Win2000. I
want to network them to share files. I dont need firewalls or
anything fancy. Just want to share files over a wired connection to a
Linksys switch. The switch recognises the computers, but I can not
get either computer to access the files on the other. I have spend
several days trying to do this manually and finally gave up. I have a
fair knowledge of computers but I am not a computer geek nor do I want
to be. There must be some software that will automate this whole
process. Please provide a link to any software I can download.
Preferable freeware.

Mozilla / firefox -"not responding" constantly

I just purchased a new HP tx2510us tablet PC

CPU 2.1 Ghz
RAM 3Gig
Vista OS

Have comcast internet
Max range Netgear wireless router

I was told this was fast enough to do basic work like surfing the net,
emails etc. even if i had 10 browser pages open all at once.

However I seem to be getting a "not responding" message on my
firefox / Mozilla page CONSTANTLY.
This is going on all the time.

The page keeps hanging for a long time.

Has anyone faced a similar situation and solved the issue ?

Please help me.

START MENU ON WINDOWS 98

I have Windows 98. Went away for a week and came back to find none of my
PROGRAMS are listed on my START MENU when I click PROGRAMS. My FAVORITES are
gone also. How do I get them back onto my START MENU?

My DDESKTOP icon has also disappeared from my tool bar next to the START
button. How can I get it back there?

Win98SE, 512MB RAM, P3-667 platform.

After operating for a while, suddenly things start to go wacky. For instance,
fonts in Win message boxes change. Or I go to save an Excel spreadsheet and I
get a "not enough resources" message, which is sometimes truncated due
presumably to ... not enough resources.

On boot-up, Eudora is the only task electively started. A Ctrl-Alt-Del shows
the following other running tasks:

Explorer
Rundll32
Stimon
Systray

If I initialise SystemMonitor, it indicates about 213MB of RAM as allocated when
nothing (else) is running. 50 kernel threads, processor 50% now with Agent
running (otherwise this would be somewhat lower). Swapfile size 50MB. Locked
memory 143MB.

If I remove Eudora from the startup process, the figures look a tad better but
not dramatically so.

Have done a virus scan and all reports clean.

Machine is networked using DHCP via a NAT router.

Can anyone suggest what else to look at/for in finding the underlying cause?

I pick up an old computer that has win 98 2nd ,and i dont have any disk (cd
or any sys disk) there is sound but cant turn it up or down there is no icon
on the taskbar.
got error message no volume control progam ect....,
i cant install it cause no disk. cant find to down load
sndvol32.exe,sndvol32.cnt, or a volume control program
can you help, i need to turn the computer down alittle

XP Display Issue With Access 2K

I am running Access 2K on an XP Pro machine. The background color for the
switchboard startup screen and all forms/screens are white, not their
regular colors. There are many versions of this applications running on at
least 50 machines and we have never seen this problem. Further, all reports
that display to the screen have a gray background -- not white. When
printed to a printer they are okay. I checked the desktop property settings
for Windows and they all seem normal. And, this computer is not having
problems with any other programs. The only Office program on the machine is
Access 2K.

Any ideas?

Need to reformat and reinstall

I have my winME key code and cd along with an XP upgrade that I purchased for
this machine's predecessor but without a floppy drive and/or boot disc, I am
a bit lost - I need to reformat and reinstall due to backdoor trojan but
can't find the XP discs & key code came with the machine when purchased new
in Dec 05.

Since I have the ME cd & key code and the XP upgrade, is is possible to
reformat and install then upgrade back to xp? Thanks!

With apologies for the repost - one positive outcome of the first one
was that I discovered that what I thought was a valid cut-and-paste
wasn't: for some reason the two surviving newsgroups have slightly
