View Full Version : Can't install

I downloaded the Windows 98SE Series 9 Media Player. When
executing the Mpsetup.exe, it states it can only be
installed on Windows 98SE, 2000, XP etc. My operating
system is Win 98SE, Pentium III 4. Why won't it install?
I appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks,
Bob

That's probably a boiler plate message. I don't think it is your OS
since you don't have win98FE or below.

I too downloaded "Windows Media Player 9 Series for
Windows 98 Second Edition, Me, and 2000" on the Downloads
page of Microsoft (MPSetup.exe 13625kb 1/7/2003) which
clearly states for Windows 98se. I have Win98se, with ALL
current patches, on an HP Pavilion 85xx which is a P3-750
288mb 20gHD PCI Riptip Audio w/DirectX9.0b. MP7.01 works
fine. The Player 9 executable launches a box stating "This
version of Win Med Player can be installed only on
Win98se, WinME, Win2k, WinXP, and Windows .NET Server."
Thats it. Does not install through Control Panel-Add
Programs either.
Please help. How do I install Player9 on an Win98SE box?
Thanks in advance - Roy.

There's another thread near the bottom of this list where LuckyStrike
says that 7.1 is better anyhow, and he gives the address for getting a
copy if you don't still have your old version.

Is there any feature that v9 has that really matters? I found the
storing or sorting or naming of Favorites to be very awkward in v6.4
-- it is beyond my ability -- but that doesn't mean v9 is better.
Other than that, I find version 6.4 to be fine.

Yes I saw the thread (irfanview). I've used it, have it. Its good and does the job. I just saw the MP9 specifically for Win98se & 2K so I thought I'd try it. Presently I use MP7 and it works fine.
I am suprised & frustrated that something MS specifically says will work for Win98se does NOT. I don't believe in bashing MS.
If there's a patch/fix, I'll be glad to run it.
If there's a beta, I'll be glad to test drive it and report back.
But its bad to release software for a spec OS and it dun't work.
Lucy - watt hop-in?
I'll stay with MP7 and wait for a patch.
No harm, no foul, no problem mon.
:-)
