hi I have Windows 98. I am trying to install a hp
officejet 4105 all-in-one printer. I 1st recieved an
error that I was trying to install a program with an
incorrect format. I checked with hp and forund I needed
an updated driver pack #2. I downloaded this and
attempted to install it on my computer however it will
not install because it cannot find a modem. I do not have
a modem and the modem is not required for the all-in-one.
Any suggestions? I would really like to be able to use
this piece of equipment.
Thanks,
Kari

I don't know where you found out that the modem is not required, but the
faxing function of the 4105 cannot operate without the modem. It is, in
fact, a fax machine that happens to have a connection to the PC. Perhaps the
modem is faulty, or has been disabled in the device setup, but the modem is
an essential component in this product and if it's not available then the
installation will not complete. Have you run the self-test diagnostics on
the machine to confirm that the modem is functional? Have you reset it to
factory defaults? Have you connected it to the phone line? Have you tried
to send a manual (paper) fax, and what was the result?

Thank you for your reply. I do not currently have a modem
installed on the computer I am trying to install the
printer on. I get on the internet by way of an internet
cafe. do you know if this printer will work with an
external modem set up?
Thanks, Kari

The printer will work with an external modem, but it will not use the
external modem. It will use only the modem that is built into the device.
If that modem is disabled or faulty then the installation will not work.
