Hi everybody.....good to "see" you again. :o)

Listen here, I know you have excellent skills here and that is why I take a
chance on you. :-))

I have gone from Win98 SE to XP Pro SP1, just for a while because I need to
learn how it works. My problem is that when ever I try to edit text in IE,
OE or XP (Word, Notepad and etc) the computer starts to go "Ape****" with
multiple windows opening up like for instance the start-menu, MS Word,
Task-manager or just any program and if I move the mouse or continue to
write it shuts down all work I am doing and sometimes the text appears
further up where I already have been and not where I actually is writing.

I posted a request in the XP's help and support NG and had the answer that
it might be the video drivers or the video card but s3 Graphics says that
WinXP have the newest drivers, so there is no need to install others. The
card is okay to. Regarding the device manager there is no problem and no
incompatible applications regarding XP. I made a total clean install with a
format on the HD in case I had something malicious but it didn't help and
all started after all security updates were installed. Hfnetchk shows some
warning about files being greater than is was suspected.

Okay, here some info about the PC....I have IBM Personal Computer 300GL from
1999, Pentium III 450 Mhz, 128 MB RAM, IE 6.0 SP1 and so is OE, Win XP Pro
SP1 fully patched and updated with all, ZA, AVG, Spybot, Ad-Aware,
SpywareBlaster, CWShredder and etc. I also have the built-in firewall
enabled.

I can also say that this problem didn't happen with Win98 installed but I
also know others who have exactly the same PC with WinXP without my problem
and yes, it is NTFS I have if you wonder. Have I forgot something, just tell
me!

TIA and thanks for your understanding that I post in this NG. :-))))

Have a nice day,

Gunilla.

did you upgrade your win98 or farmat and do a clean install?

the clean install method is preferred and less likely to give problems

Hi philo and thanks.

I first made a fdisk and took away the primary partition with Win98 and then
formatted the HD before I installed WinXP, so all was from the scratch. The
WinXP installation also made a format and converted the file system to NTFS.

Cheers / Gunilla.

Your best bet for finding a solution for this problem is with the
Windows XP newsgroups. However the "help and support" newsgroup that
you used is one that is intended for problems with the "help and
support" function in Windows XP although it does sometimes function as
a general support forum. Try using microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
or microsoft.public.windowsxp.video

Two points regarding your system.
1. 128 mb of RAM is absolutely minimal for running Windows XP with no
applications and is woefully inadequate if you actually want to run an
application program or two. With a 450 mhz CPU you need to seriously
consider upgrading to 512 mb of RAM (if the motherboard will support
that much) if you are going to continue to use Windows XP.
2. When you did the clean install of Windows XP did you delete the
partition as well and let Windows XP create a new NTFS partition or
did you install XP on the FAT32 partition and then convert it to NTFS
after the install? If you installed it on FAT32 and then converted
to NTFS you probably have a cluster size issue with your NTFS that
will adversely affect performance but should not cause the problems
you are seeing. See http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.htm for
details.

Good luck

Thanks Ron for your reply.

I realize that the lack of RAM can be a problem and I have thought about it,
will put in some more when having the ability. Just to answer your
question...I did run an fdisk - deleted the primary partition with Win98 and
formatted the HD before I installed WinXP who also formatted the HD, once
again, and made a NTFS partition.

Cheers,

Gunilla.

What Ron said.

Before upgrading to WinXP, did you run
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp?

I know what s3 supposedly told you but have you looked for WinXP-compatible
driver updates at the s3 site? Carey also suggested replacing the video
card (cf. http://snipurl.com/81en), remember.

In WinXP, a now-four plus year old video card, especially with only 128 mb
of RAM on the machine, is like trying to run a 15mm film on your DVD player.
(OK, I exaggerate...but not by much. <wink>)

PS: Update your AVG! Configure it to seek automatically seek updates daily!

Hi PA...thanks for jumping in. :-))

I didn't run the Upgrade Advisor because I didn't know about it but I did
run the WinXP compatible utility from the WinXP CD when still having Win98,
before I ran the fdisk and formatted the HD, and regarding that nothing
showed up to be incompatible. In the link you provided I saw that UA only
works with the English version and I have the Swedish.

As for the s3 site....I have downloaded other drivers but not yet installed
them as they seemed to be older than the ones that is bundled with WinXP.
Couldn't really decide how to do but maybe I should give them a try, I can
always replace them if it wont work or maybe just switch back to Win98...it
is way more easy to use than XP but I also realize that XP takes more RAM by
default. I have heard (read) that WinXP needs 64 MB of RAM by its self.
Okay...more RAM might be the primary or a better Video card....or maybe
both?

Well...take care and be good ...:o))

Gunilla.

[förlåt!]

And sometimes you're just throwing good money after bad. In the long run,
maybe it'd be best to just buy a new PC with WinXP installed, Gunilla.

If you've converted to NTFS, returning to Win98 and FAT32 is questionable at
best. See http://aumha.org/win5/a/ntfs.php#convert

I've found WinXP much more satisfactory than Win98. Have you considered
switching to Classic View? You may find things easier and more familiar.

Unless you truly needed what WinXP Pro has to offer, you probably would've
been better off (and more satisfied) with WinXP Home.

Keep on keepin' on!

I commend you for the volunteer work you're doing, Gunilla.

I find you experience surprising. Returning to FAT32 from NTSF is usually
fraught with problems, if it's possible at all, Gunilla. I shall attempt to
entice one or two MVPs, more-experienced than me, to contribute to this
thread.

Oh thanks PA. It is easy and nice to do when knowing that someone will be
happy and pleased, just as it must be for you all MVP's and others when
getting good credit for all your support here in the NG's. Unfortunately not
all people show their appreciations.

Let me just say that I am certainly not an expert who can go into a
discussion about what is right or wrong and especially not if it contains
difficult words but I can say as much that I have done it and also people I
know without to have any problems.
I once got an extra HD from our Tax-office, they are selling them cheap when
changing, and that was a NTFS but that time I had still Win98, so I changed
the HD to FAT32. No problem with that, but it is not the same HD I am using
now.

BTW...thank you for correcting the misspelled word! :-)) And of course, I
think if there is morte experienced than you, they must be quite a few.
Cheers,

Gunilla.

Alex Nichol, who wrote that page at aumha.org, responds:

"The only tool I know that tries to do the NTFS to FAT 32 conversion
is Partition Magic 8.01 That is said to be able to do it, provided
that there are no folders/files compressed with NTFS compression (you
are likely to stumble over $NTUninstall ones for uninstalling
Hotfixes) and no files that have been encrypted with the Encrypting
file system. Those must be restored to uncompressed unencrypted
form first. And I think it might stumble over handling some of the
NTFS access control settings.

"Basically I would say - do not convert until you are certain you
will be happy with the result, or have a complete backup from which
the partition could be rebuilt.

"I think the question has to be how was this achieved? Win98 of
course does not support NTFS and the only normal way to revert would
be to delete the partition and a clean install. So what other steps
are claimed?"

Converting back to FAT32 may not be a problem if there's no data on the hard
drive which you need to have available after the conversion when you return
to Win98, Gunilla. This sounds like it was the case in your previous
scenarios [scenariae?] but not now.

I know a guy who converted back to FAT32 when having folders and files on
the HD but that HD was just used as an extra storage. I got that HD and had
it on my old PC but I had the OS (Win98) on my other HD, if you know what I
mean.

This you wrote above applies to how I did...no data was ever on that HD
since the IT Technicians had already formatted the HD's before selling them.
Thanks, interesting to have others oppinions. I am so curious about it so I
just got to try with a spare-HD I got. I will be back with the results but
it might take some days.
