View Full Version : CD and DVD drives missing

My cd and dvd drives are not being recognized when I open
My Computer. The only thing I can think of that I've done
differently is defragment my harddrive. In device manager
it shows an ! on the floppy controller and the primary and
secondary ide controllers. I tried searching for a
driver; It says the best driver is installed. I tried
adding new hardware; It says it's already installed and
has a problem, then sends me back to it's properties. I
tried searching for the NOIDE value; It's not showing a
NOIDE value. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting, and
nothing is working. Could someone please help me?

First, ensure that your PC does actually 'see' both of the CD ROM's. Their
cables *may* have become dislodged. Either look in the BIOS to see if they
are recognised there or confirm that you can 'see' them in Real Mode DOS

To 'see' them in DOS, Boot, using your WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk in the A:
drive.
Select option 2. Start computer with CD-ROM support.
Let the screen information scroll until you eventually see a line similar
to:
Your CD-ROM drives are E and F (make a note of each of their letters)
N.B. these letters will not be the same as you would normally expect!

Insert a CD into the first CD-ROM and at the A:\> prompt, type "dir e:" (no
quotes, use the letter(s) from above and note the space and colon) then
press Return.

If your CD-ROMs are working OK you should get a directory listing of the
contents of the CD, if not you will get an error report.

Post back with the results

Sorry it took so long, I had to go to work. I did exactly
what you said, and this is what showed up:
Drive E:= Driver MSCD001 unit 0
Drive F:= Driver MSCD001 unit 1

Your CD-ROM is Drive E

On both E: and F: the full dir displayed for the cd I
inserted. Thanks for the help. What's the next step?

Well that's certainly a positive step!! They both appear to work OK in DOS

Boot into Windows (Normal Mode) and look in Device Manager for CD-ROM Drives
and see what (if any) devices are shown and make a note of them. Also note
if there are any errors (yellow exclamation marks)

Then 'Remove' them - all of them - (right-click and select Remove). Then
shut-down and re-boot.

With a bit of luck, they *should* be re-detected and install correctly and
work!

I checked device manager. The floppy, Primary IDE
Controller (fifo), and Secondary IDE Controller (fifo)all
say:
This device is either not present, not working properly,
or does not have all drivers installed.

We I tried to remove the Primary and Secondary IDEs it
says I cannot with removing the parent controller: Intel(r)
82801BA Ultra ATA Storage Controller. When I remove that,
everything freezes and I have to manually reboot. When
everything loads back up, the same exclamations are in the
device manager.

I tried to system restore, but all my restore dates before
I had this problem have been removed.

You need to remove the IDE Controllers while in Safe Mode - as you've found
out, all that happens in Normal Mode is that your machine loses the HD's<g>

OK, assuming that when

you did it in Normal Mode, as requested?

If so, try again in Safe Mode, removing any/all instances of the above,
including any/all items with yellow exclamation marks. - Remove the yellow
'bangs' before you remove the Storage Controller (i.e. before it freezes)

Re-boot and see if any improvement.

Jessie, its getting late over this side of the pond but just a further
suggestion whilst I sleep on it <g> try physically removing both CD-ROMS (as
well as Removing previous items in Device Manager in Safe Mode) and re-boot
SEVERAL times checking DevMan each time.

Then, after a few re-boots, re-introduce and re-install the CD-ROMS to see
if that clears things. Weird remnants often stay lurking in the registry and
some .ini files for a while until some radical flushing is done. Some of
these settings and re-settings can take several 'goes' to make them stick.

Good luck

Mart
