View Full Version : No sound unless started in Safe mode (WinME)

Doug
June 23rd 04, 05:17 PM
Running Win ME, Creative Labs SB Live! 5.1

I just put this sound card in, and there's no sound. I called Creative about
10 times, finally found it's loaded and installed correctly. We determined
together that it's probably a problem with my system.ini file, because when
I load the PC in safe mode the sound works. When I say safe mode, what I do
is go into msconfig, choose Selective Startup, and deselect all the options
underneath Selective Startup. When I restart under this mode, the sound is
loud and clear.

Can anyone help me?

Sounds like your Sound Card driver is no longer being properly recognised,
is incorrectly set-up, or is corrupted. You need to re-install your Creative
software.

Boot into Safe Mode and if necessary, uninstall your Creative software in
Control Panel \ Add/Remove Programs. Then in Device Manager, 'Remove'
any/all "Sound, video and game controllers", shut down and re-boot.

WinMe *should* re-detect (Plug&Play) your Creative sound card and then ask
you for the Creative CD to install the 'correct' drivers.

BTW - when you say "I just put this sound card in", was that to replace an
existing 'on-board' sound device? If so, did you remember to uninstall it
and disable it in the BIOS??

HTH and good luck

I don't think it was on-board, it was in a PCI slot. Do I still need to
disable it in BIOS?

If it was a PCI card then you don't have to disable it in the BIOS. That
only applies to an 'on-board' device.

However, the fact that you replaced an existing PCI card means that the
original drivers were probably still lurking on your hard disk, or more
importantly their presence being recorded in the Registry - hence my
previous advice:-

"Boot into Safe Mode and ..... in Device Manager, 'Remove' any/ALL "Sound,
video and game controllers", shut down and re-boot."

Good luck

I have deleted all Sound Video and Game controllers. Twice, maybe even three
times.

Can anyone offer any help with regards to the system.ini file?

Yes I did it in safe mode.

In fact, I followed Creative Labs' instructions to the letter for removing
old drivers and installing new ones. See the following Solution ID from

OK, let's go back a few steps:

I'm not too sure what you mean in your first post about being in Safe Mode,
so can you please confirm the following:

You say that the sound works in Safe Mode, so you can play .wav files and
..mid files - but NOT audio CD's (CD drivers don't load in Safe Mode!)?

Try booting into Safe Mode using the official method, (i.e. Ctrl or F8 at
bootup) and confirm the previous sentence.

In Normal Mode, can you play ANY of the above (including audio CD's)? Do you
hear the WinMe 'fanfare' as Windows opens?

When I start in safe mode using F8 at bootup, I get no sound at all (no
WinME "fanfare", no mp3, no CD's)

When I start without the startup files, I get all the audio I need. I do
this by going into msconfig, check Selective Startup, and deselect all the
options underneath it, such as: "Process System.ini file" "Process Win.ini
file" "Load static VxDs" "Load Startup Group Items" "Load environment
variables"

That's expected.

Instead try eliminating one by one to find out where the problem is.

Good luck

Indeed - that's exactly why I needed to determine whether Doug really was in
Safe Mode (as he stated) rather than Selective Start-up Mode, and of course
he was not in Safe Mode - which points the problem back to the drivers.

Doug, if you can't identify the 'offender' using MP's advice, I can only
suggest re-installing the SB drivers yet again.

Are you sure that you are using the latest *WinMe compatible* drivers. Check
again with Creative.

(BTW - the link to SID1359 had time expired so was of no help)

OK I found the offending file. It's the System.ini file. I unchecked it and
used selective startup, and I had sound on startup, including the WinME
"fanfare". I can play CD's, MP3's, everything.

Now what?

I've noticed that you mentioned the system.ini file(contained in the Windows
folder) in a couple of your posts.

There would 'appear' to be an entry in that file which has not been
removed/deleted/modified when you 'Removed' the (all) previous drivers
and/or not been overwritten by the new installation.

Make a copy of the file and keep it safe (in case you need to use it later).
Now try 'looking' at it the working file in notepad and see if you can find
a line (or lines) referring to multimedia devices or sound card drivers.

Edit the file by 'Remming' (remarking) it out (I.E. - Type rem or put a semi
colon at the start of that line) ONE LINE AT A TIME and save the file (it
should save itself as system.ini)

Re-boot into Normal Mode and see if your sound card now works. Repeat the
process for each line, one at a time, until you find the offending line -
re-editing (removing) the semi-colon from the previous save.

Good luck

Mart

And you can attach a copy of the system.ini file to your next reply.
Maybe somoene can discover the problem.

Hi MP - yes I would like to see it myself but was apprehensive of requesting
an attachment of an unknown length file <g>

Perhaps relevant lines could be pasted into reply?

Mart -
The error is usually in the first section of the system.ini file - the
[boot] section

often, the
drivers=mmsystem.dll power.drv
line is either missing completely, or has nothing after the = sign.

Thanks Noel, my WinMe box (laptop) is out on loan at the moment and I
couldn't remember where that section was - it's been quite a while since I
looked at a system.ini file <g>

But tend not to request attachments on NG's <g>

It's bad enough keeping track of one OS per machine without mixing them. But
I can understand why you included the 'E' <g>

I understand. But system.ini is a small text file and we will notice if
something else was attached. Anyway, maybe copy&paste is the better way.

If that's all there is to it, then it's no wonder you're having problems -
around 2/3rds is missing!

Undo the amendments in MSCONFIG, and repost.

OK Doug, just to recap a little,

Make a copy of system.ini and keep it safe (in case you need to use it
later).

(Just another thought, you may be able to achieve the same objective by
editing(enabling/disabling the check boxes in) the system.ini tab in
msconfig.exe)

Two lines to consider initially are:-

> [boot]
> system.drv=system.drv
> drivers=mmsystem.dll ***************
> user.exe=user.exe
> gdi.exe=gdi.exe
> sound.drv=mmsound.drv ***************
> dibeng.drv=dibeng.dll
> comm.drv=comm.drv
> mouse.drv=mouse.drv
> keyboard.drv=keyboard.drv
> shell=Explorer.exe
> *DisplayFallback=0

Re-boot into Normal Mode and see if your sound card now works. Repeat the
process for each line, one at a time, until you find the offending line -
re-editing (removing) the semi-colon from the previous save.

You may have to try other lines too - as I said elsewhere, I don't have a
WinMe box available to give you direct comparisons. Maybe Noel, MP or
someone else could jump in here.

(I still find it odd that a 'fresh' install (of the SB drivers) hasn't
corrected it)

Good luck

Mart

Actually - looking a little closer, that one looks like the default 'new'
system.ini rather than anything else.

Remove that - it's part of a Spyware install!!

Correct the next line to read
[boot description]

under
[drivers32]
remove the excess entries for
msacm.ctmp3=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ctmp3.acm
remove the following lines
CacheBlockSize=000840FF1E20C30149
CacheLineSize=0088A4F7B137C301CF

Under [mci]
remove
QTWVideo=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MCIQTW.DRV

add

[TTFontDimenCache]
0 4=2 4
0 5=3 5
0 6=4 6
0 7=4 7
0 8=5 8
0 9=5 9
0 10=6 10
0 11=7 11
0 12=7 12
0 13=8 13
0 14=8 14
0 15=9 15
0 16=10 16
0 18=11 18
0 20=12 20
0 22=13 22

and remove the second
[boot description]
section

How much RAM is installed - if less than 576MB, remove the entry under the
[vcache] header

see how that works, and post back the new file

Doug, where have the two previously(?) 'remmed' lines gone?

[boot]
> ; drivers=mmsystem.dll ***************
>
>

> etc., etc...

Have you tried re-installing your sound card drivers? There doesn't seem to
be any reference to its drivers anywhere in your latest system.ini file. In
fact, I didn't recognise ANY Creative Labs drivers in any of the files
you've posted.

I'm lost <g>

Are you sure this is all you have under the [boot] section. You don't
even have a shell entry. It's possible that Windows just defaults to
explorer if it can't find an entry for the shell but this is a very
truncated [boot] section anyway.

++Probably one entry enough. Maybe the result of installing sound
drivers a few times. Also in systems with audio problems you are advised
to rename this file (for example ctmp3.old or .bak or .doug). This is a
file mainly for creative mediaplayer++

Mmmm.... on reflection, I think ctxxx.xxx files maybe Creative ones.

But just wondering if it might be worthwhile starting with a 'fresh' copy of
System.ini which can be extracted from the mini.cab on your WinMe CD (or the
Setup files in the Windows\Options.... folder.)

You may well have to re-install or re-set some of your other drivers in the
process, but it should clear the offending remnants.

You can always put you 'old' copy back if it makes it worse.

OK what do I need to do to extract from the WinME CD. I don't want to screw
anything up.

Several options, the official being to use msconfig.exe and use the
'extract' option.

See the following Knowledge Base article:-
"How to Extract and Replace a Protected File in Windows Me"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;265371

The 'fresh' system.ini file is mini.cab in the \Win9x folder. You might even
be able to view AND extract the file from the cab using Widows Explorer.
Just make sure that you haven't got system files hidden.

At this stage, just put the extracted file into a temporary folder until you
are ready to do the actual deed <g>. It will also give you the opportunity
to view it both before and after replacing it, so that you could (if you
want) note any changes after the setup.

> anything up.

You've always got your 'original' copy of system ini (haven't you? <g>) AND
there's always System Restore to fall back on (if it still works <g>)

HTH and good luck

OK, something really bad happened with this move, I don't think I'm going to
try this again. I almost had to reload windows. I followed the instructions
from this web page, restarted windows, and the PC shut down, telling me it
can't find some file named win9x.bin (or maybe win9xsetup.bin, I can't
remember).

I had to go into DOS Mode and reload my original SYSTEM.INI file from the
BACKUPS directory.

Which is precisely why I suggested "Make a copy of the file and keep it safe
(in case you need to use it later)" in one of my earlier posts!!

win9xsetup.bin is in the \Win9x folder of the WinMe CD and it was *probably*
trying to set-up your hardware again to re-populate the system.ini file.

However, I still think that you've got one or more 'rogue' entries or files
floating around your PC somewhere which need flushing out. The line(s) in
system ini *may* actually be 'correct' but calling old or damaged files
elsewhere. Bear in mind that although different (older) versions, 'updated'
files/drivers usually retain the same name <g>

As a matter of interest, what was wrong with your original sound card? And,
as you were changing it, did you 'Remove' all of its software/drivers BEFORE
you started installing your new card? It *may* have used generic Creative
files which are often common to many sound cards.

You could try (physically) removing the new card and (cold) booting
*several* times - checking, each time for oddments/remnants in Device
Manager, again to help flush things out. It might also be worth searching
your system for all 'redundant' Creative and previous sound cards' files
(look also in the Windows\ini folder and sub-folders).

I would very reluctantly suggest a third-party registry cleaning utility -
but these can cause far more harm than good if they are not used
cautiously!!

Only when you are (reasonably) satisfied that all the junk has been cleared,
then try re-installing your SB Live! 5.1 again. A long process, but even '10
goes' with Creative, wasn't able to fix it <g>

Good luck

Thanks for that advice.

I wasn't getting any sound at all from the old sound card. Not much has
changed here. I did remove all the old drivers in safe mode.

I'll try this move again. Thanks.

Any suggestions here?

I use an old(ish) version of the jv16 RegCleaner (which was freeware when I
D/L'd it quite some time ago - but it has been superseded by RegSupreme
which is no longer free)

May be worth trawling the Web yourself for something - BUT be VERY careful
when 'playing' in the Registry with any kind of registry utility - Don't say
that you weren't warned!!

In the mean time, I'm still trying to get my head around a previous
statement you made:-

Not quite too sure *what* you unchecked (in what application/utility)
and *how did you 'use' selective startup? - in msconfig or the DOS start
menu?

I used msconfig and checked selective startup, and then unchecked all the
options underneath selective startup one by one. When I unchecked system.ini
and restarted the computer, I had sound.

OK, thanks for that reply - so therefore have you tried 'remming' out the
various lines (one at a time, if necessary) in system.ini to see if you can
determine the offender?

Rapidly running out of ideas <g>

I haven't done one line at a time yet.
