View Full Version : W98 is so FAST !!

RJK
June 5th 04, 08:55 PM
My brother (2nd of 4) bought himself, and his family an old PC with P166mmx
/ 1.2gb ST31277A hd 32mb EDO on 72 pin simms (4 modules / slots all
filled)...

system.dat had vanished... I reformatted it, (it tried to recover a bad
cluster / or just marked one out as bad - I was only half watching. Then I
glanced around to it, now and again as W98se went in,

....I've just had a "play" with it ...IT's REALLY SWIFT !!!!!! ...and with
only32mb of EDO in it , NOT 64mb ....I said THIRTY TWO !
There is an ATI Mach64 card in it and the Rage driver that W98se
installation stuffed in seem to be okay, I also notice a Yamaha OPLsax, or
something like that, sound driver has gone in.

What a shame W98se couldn't cope with the ISA modem that's in there :-)
....just kidding.

....but, it's all so OLD !!!!

regards, Richard

....I'll be building him a new one but, won't they be impressed when it's
returned all clean & luvly ! ...tiz for the kids Word / Excel etc. (no
internet) ...I'm not sitting here tweaking that lot up ..on that !!

Hi Richard,
I was forced to do a fresh install of W98SE last November. My machine is
older, and more underpowered than yours. But, you're right, a fresh install
*is* fast, even on an old machine!

Hi RJK,

This is exactly why Win98 is the most used OS around. There
is a lot of old hardware still functioning that can not be upgraded
past Win98. And this is one of the reasons why MS extended the
support and security updates for two more years.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

One of my pet peeves is that whenever I see someone waxing on about how much
faster XP is, they are invariably comparing XP on *new* hardware against 98
on *old* hardware, and/or comparing a *fresh* XP install against an old,
bloated 98 install. IME, a fresh install of 98 is at least as fast as XP
even on newer hardware, and on older hardware or limited memory there's no
question that 98 is faster.

I use an XP at work that isn't overly bloated...I've just
added a few programs over Office compared to what I've
installed on my home Win98 and frankly... they are the same.
In fact, there are some things that I do where the wait is
noticeably longer than on my 98.

I'm not anti one or the other. I've configured XP to look
similar to 98, I can find everything easily.... it's a
different platform, not a better one - IMO. Of course, I'm
just looking at it from the user POV, not as anyone who
delves any deeper than installing new software.

BTW: I should probably scandisk and defrag it... if that's
wht you do. What sort of routine maintenance is appropriate
for XP?

TIA

How do you like the fact that when they are comparing the two operating
systems they are using 98 in the original install without any updates. I
would like to see a real head-head comparision of XP Pro. with a fully
updated 98SE operating system.

Same ones, sf. Use My Computer, right-click the drive, Properties, Tools
tab.

Note that Chkdsk (the checking utility) is seldom if ever needed unless some
particular issue suggests it, and Defrag is not anywhere *near* as critical
to good performance in XP as it is in 9x. I only CHKDSK when I'm bored, and
Defrag when I remember to, especially after doing major file reorganizations
or reprogramming chores.

.....Having said all that, by the time I'd put in Office 2000 Premium, (was
going to go for Office97 but, that's looking a little dated now), put in a
firewall and a/v and made a DUN for my "anytime" dial up account, so that I
could update stuff (about 7mb's worth), ...didn't do any MS critical
updates! ...Kyodai and Scrabble, and a few other odds and ends ...and Norton
Utilities 2002 with all the "load at startup" modules switched off etc.
there's now only 500mb's free on that 1.2gb hd so I thought I'd better stop.

....the swap file and timer bottle are now the main features ! ...well, it
was while things were installing. What I now want to know is, where are all
those millions of 32mb 72pin EDO modules that have been superceded since
1992, and used to cost £499 + tax around that time ? If I could find four
of those for next to nothing it would make the thing hugely more responsive
:-) ...did anybody notice that I worded that last bit very carefully so as
not to get jumped on and told that "more memory does NOT make a micro
faster, it simply stops it from being as slow as it was." :-) ...mmm flame
and food for a humungously long hair splitting thread :-) ?!~!

Well, I am finally ready. I plan to have a dual-boot system of 98SE and XP
Pro on two seperate hard drives. 98SE on a 40 gig. hard drive and XP Pro on
an 80 gigabyte hard drive. Upgraded motherboard, powersupply, cpu, video
card, new dvd burner, bought full XP Pro., etc. I am so excited about
having two operating systems. 98SE will be FAT32 while XP Pro. will be
NTFS --- exciting and thrilling. Any comments for me about this system. I
can start a new post if Richard is not finished telling us about his
exploits on getting an old 98 system up and running --- :> vbg LOL et. all

My first thought would be Bootit NG, for multi booting, partition
management and imaging!

This look rather tempting also!!!

Hello Art,

I think you'll find that your excitement over having dual boot gradually
turns into at least a slightly disappointing realisation that one has to
spend much more time maintaining two platforms, than maintaining just one.

I had dual boot W98se / XP pro, for about a year, or was it two. I had
great fun making OE use the same message store in both platforms, and making
both use the same swapfile, temp variables etc. but, then, I gradually used
98se less and less, and used XP pro more and more. Then, I needed change my
PC innards and rearrange my drives and add a bigger 2nd hd, so after
pondering for ten minutes on the time required to tweak and maintain two
platforms to how I like them, I think I had a mini nervous breakdown and
scrapped the lot and rushed out and bought XP Home edition ! I didn't like
a lot of what I was reading about NTFS e.g.
http://www.digit-life.com/articles/ntfs/ so I prepared both my 80gb hd's
with FAT32 drives, installed W98se, then slapped in XP and "upgraded" to XP
Home rather than go for dual boot. And I've been happy ever since :-)
....but, it's still fun to tackle a W98se machine. I had to keep doing the
"going away" thing, because time goes much more slowly while you're waiting
for the system to come back !

regards, Richard

Why did you install Win98SE first just prior to putting on XP? I assume
it's because you bought the Upgrade XP version of windows.

But by doing it this way, it wasn't really a clean install, right? How
much time were you on Win98SE before you upgraded it to XP, Richard?

Hello Bill,

You don't get the option, (during XP install), of installing XP onto a FAT32
drive unless XP detects a W98 installation on the drive where you're
attempting to install it. It's a while ago now but, I had a major fiddle,
and the only way I could get XP onto a FAT32 drive was to stuff in W98se and
then boot from the XP Home ed. cd and go for 'upgrade'. It wasn't all that
far off a clean install :-) ...I didn't bother to install any drivers into
W98se, just did the XP upgrade and carried on from there.

....I mainly did it like that so that I could use my older version of
Partition Magic, (which works okay in XP but, doesn't like NTFS drives), to
do a big batch job on my 2x80gb hd's, and also so that all my older hd
utility software still works, and for a lot of other reasons that seemed
good at the time :-)

regards, Richard

Not my mileage with XP Home. SOP is:

1) BING set up partitions (FAT32 primary, extd with FAT16 and FAT32)
2) Format C: /S from Win98SE boot diskette, to create C:\IO.SYS etc.
3) Install WInXP Home from DSP CD
4) Install Recovery Console from CD

I use a response file to set the OS base dir to something other than
"C:\Windows". For this to work, you must first create a C:\Windows,
else it will ignore your setting and install there anyway. When done,
you can delete the (empty) C:\Windows

Ooops! What I meant was, and a couple of things I sort of found out the
hard way, backalong were:-

Booting from XP Home ed. cd:-
If hd has no partitions, the install to FAT32 option never appears, you get
NTFS - like it or lump it.
I think I tried to install to a FAT32 drive & it wouldn't have it, perhaps
because I didn't use the /s switch with format, as you point out, ...i
didn't think of that !
At one point I did boot from XP Home cd and got a blue DOS screen with lots
of options inc. FAT32 but, I got tired, in a muddle, probably slipped up
somewhere, overlooked something simple somewhere, and in the end "upgraded"
:-)

The reason you wanted to stick with FAT32 was to keep compatability with
some older utilities? (I am curious). Can you be more specific?

I was also thinking it would be nice to retain the capability of being able
to boot to a floppy boot disk (if something ever goes wrong, and you can't -
or don't want to - get into windows), which I think you lose, if you go the
NTFS route. Is that correct?

I don't know all that much about NTFS, other than bits I've read on various
web sites. One horror story I read talked about retrieving data files from
a busted XP platform that could not be repaired. To recover important data
files using something that looked similar to a DOS program, or if you
prefer, a program that could boot you XP machine and access the NTFS drive
and revover files without running XP, (because it's busted and
unrepairable), such as http://www.stellarinfo.com/download.htm

For the simple reason that an XP platform can get busted beyond repair, and
that good file recovery software was very expensive, I got really 'turned
off' regarding NTFS, when I had a good read about it - months ago. There
seems to be lots of file recovery software for NTFS nowadays that's also a
lot cheaper but, a lot of it seems to be intended for use on a working XP
platform. In any event I suspect you only get what you pay for !

Cquirke, I am taking up your idea and sent it into Microsoft about a sequel
to MS-DOS and the maintenance operating system. Thanks for suggesting this
idea to me and I hope you do not mind that I used your suggestion. Much

I plan to have dual-boot
98SE on one hard disk -- Fat32
XP Pro full version on another hard disk -- NTFS
Compatibility with MS-DOS programs solved and able to run new stuff
solved --- Best of Both Worlds and am happy to still have true MS-DOS -- may
eventually tripple boot with MS-DOS 6.22 thrown in there too after my next
full format --- I'm loving computers again -- :> (Haven't given much
thought to Linux or Apple yet -- too much for me to learn in Windows and
MS-DOS right now but if Microsoft rubs me the wrong way too much then bye,
bye Windows and hello Linux and Apple :>)

What about using GOBack Deluxe by Roxio (now Symantec -- they bought it to
solve your problem?)

Would likely be absolutely useless if the file system's barfed. That
approach ASSumes there's something sane to "go back" to :-)

No, perfection is not an entrance requirement.
We'll settle for integrity and humility

It's a pleasure, and of course you can use it ;-)

You'd end up with a triple-boot between the Win98 DOS mode, XP, and
the XP Recovery Console. That gives the best maintainability, tho
certain crises would still require off-HD bootup. Several boot issues
that RC can address would also stop RC from HD-booting, etc.
