This tape drive was working properly in a Pentium 1 running Win98SE, using MSBACKUP.
I've now moved it to my new machine (AMD Duron 18GHz) running WinME (upgrade installed over Win98SE).
The tape drive appears OK in Device Manager (it's sharing the floppy drive cable). I also installed MSBACKUP once I'd found it on the WinME CD. MSBACKUP shows QIC80 tape drive as the destination (as before) and runs OK up to the point when it is going to access the tape drive. At that point I get an error message saying MSBACKUP has failed in <unknown> and is terminating.
In search of the most likely cure, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling MSBCKUP. Should I uninstall WinME, test MSBACKUP under Win98 and then re-upgrade to WinME? What are the likely causes of the error maessage?

I used to use a QIC-40 drive(still got it around somewhere) but I was
using a custom DOS program to do backups, so I don't know how much help
I can be.

Do things work properly in Safe Mode ? (may be a Windows issue)

Is there a DOS program you can use to access the drive from a floppy
disk boot? (just checking to make sure the drive is hooked up properly,
etc.)

I've never had any trouble installing/uninstalling an Iomega tape drive
sharing the floppy drive cable and I've tried installing/uninstalling many
times, both on WinMe and Win95&98 (for other test reasons)

However, although not the same error report, it might be worth looking at:
"Error 1 Starting Data Management Kernel" Error Message Occurs When You
Start Microsoft Backup
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306325
just in case you've got a damaged .dat file.

Also may be worth looking at:
PRB: Computer Stops Responding (Hangs) When Installing Intel ATA/100 Storage
Driver
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;272450
and playing with the suggestion regarding the two drvxxxx.vxd files to see
if that helps. They *may* not have been cleanly removed/replaced/updated
when re-installing. Make sure that they've gone when you uninstall.

Good luck

Thanks for your tips. In the end, I got things working by uninstalling MSBACKUP, removing a few DLLs from \Windows\System and reinstalling. I must have done things in the wrong sequence the first time.

Good to hear that you've now got it working OK - Thanks for the feedback.
