can't go above 1 gig with 98SE or ME because of software
limitations.I have NEVER needed more than 512 even with
Photo Shop so why waste your money? Some boards require
you to put memory in slot 1 and 3 and some require 1 and 2
and others don't care. Look in the manual.

Win Me like all Win 9x systems can support up to 2GB subject to the necessary
addition of MaxFileCache=512000 to the [VCache] section of system.ini.
However many motherboards have a much lower limit as to the amount of memory
that can be installed and some systems seem to have problems when more than
1GB is installed.

No argument though with the rest of your post. :-) For most users 512MB is
more than adequate and >1GB often, as you say, just as waste of money.
