A while back I was trying to play a CD on my computer and
it wouldn't play. I didn't really try to do anything with
it. Today I was looking in the My Computer folder and both
of my CD drives are missing. Does anyone know what might
have happened? Thanks oin advance for any help.

Well I'm having the same problem and have gotten some
advice from people on here but still haven't found a
solution yet. I will let you know if I get my CD-ROM
Drive working and can you do the same if you get yours
working. For some reason after I installed WindowsME I
don't have my CD-DRive listed or able to work anymore
either.

Try this

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL CD-ROM devices
Remove ALL error-flagged devices
Remove ALL entries in the 'Other Devices' branch - if present
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall required drivers.

See if that helps

I tried doing what you said and nothing happened. The
drives still aren't present in the my computer and I can't
access anything through the cd drives. When I rebooted in
safe mode, there weren't any flagged devices. But in
normal mode, I have my "Secondary IDE Controller (dual
fife)" flagged. I'm not sure exactly what this does but
when I try to find the best drivers for it, all I can get
is the one that is already installed. I don't want to mess
anything up on my computer so any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

Shelley,

Have you looked at this article yet?
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;189526

I don't know if that could help you or not, but I've had
ME since I got the computer and it just started doing this
within the past 2 or so months. We've owned the computer
for a few years now and it has never done this before.
I'll be sure to let you know if I fix the problem though.
Thanks for any help.

Your CD-ROM is connected to your secondary controller and until that is
recognised by Win Me you will not be able to use devices connected to that
controller. Boot Again to Safe Mode and try deleting your Master IDE
controller and its primary and secondary controllers. Reboot back into Normal
Mode and let Win Me detect your hardware and hopefully this time correctly
install the drivers

Hi Mike,

I tried your advice and was only able to remove my master
IDE I was unable to remove my primary and secondary it
said something about it was shared and was unable to
remove. But I did remove my master and restarted in
WindowsME but it detected my master but still can not get
my CD-ROM detected. Do you think this problem is
something I am going to have to take and be fixed? I have
tried the advice you, others and microsoft website has
given me and still for some reason cannot get WindowsME to
recognize my CD-ROM. Do you have any other advice that
may be able to help me. I hate to have to spend a fortune
getting it fixed by someone.

Thanks for any help

Your problem isn't your CD-ROM, that's the result of the problem. The actual
problem is that your secondary IDE controller doesn't seem to want to install
correctly. As to why I haven't sufficient information to hazard a guess.

KB 125174 - "Explanation of Error Codes Generated by Device Manager"
(http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=125174) has this to say.

"Code 9
The text for this error code varies, depending on whether or not the device is
BIOS/ACPI enumerated. If this is a BIOS or ACPI enumerated device, the
following text is displayed:

This device is not working properly because the BIOS in your computer is
reporting the resources for the device incorrectly. (Code 9)

Contact your computer manufacturer to get an updated BIOS for your computer.

<snip>

This code means that the information in the registry for this device is
invalid.

It may be possible to resolve this error by using Device Manager to remove the
device and then running the Add New Hardware tool in Control Panel. If you
continue to receive this error code, contact the hardware's manufacturer for
the proper registry settings or updated drivers. "

I tried doing what you told me to do, but I got the same
message as Shelly. I can't delete the primary and
secondary IDE's, just the master one. Also, it gives me a
code 10 as the reason for my secondary IDE to not be
working. Just a quick question, should I be able to see
the option for a CD-ROM on my device manager in normal
mode? I did in safe mode but not in normal. Thanks again,
it's nice to know someone cares.

What kind of a reply is this?

Well I'm still having problems and can not use my CD-ROM
Drive. I am thinking about having someone reboot my
entire computer and get rid of windowsME unfortunately I
will lose everything on my computer but at least hopefully
then I'll be able to use my cd drive. I can't seem to find
any other solution on how to fix my problem. The cd-rom
works and it's listed in the bios but still unable to get
the computer to recognize it. Thanks for all the help

I see nowhere where anyone has said to remove Win Me. What you need to do is
establish why your secondary IDE controller is showing Code 9 in the Device
Manager.

Hi Mike,

No I agree no one has said to remove windowsME, but I'm
also not sure how to establish my secondary IDE. I was
also told by someone that I shouldn't need my secondary
IDE. So I'm not really sure whatelse to do from here but
to reboot my computer and remove WindowsME in the process.
Unless anyone has any solutions. Thanks

Since your CD-ROM is currently attached to your secondary controller then I'd
say you do need it otherwise you wouldn't be posting here about having
problems and not being able to use your CD-ROM. :-) I do admit though that
one solution to your problem would be to open the PC case and transfer the
CD-ROM from being on the secondary controller to being the second or slave
device on the primary controller sharing it with your hard drive, assuming
that you only have the two IDE devices, one hard drive and one CD-ROM.
Naturally this wouldn't work if you have two hard drives, master and slave, on
the primary controller.

Now that's not the route I'd take but it might be considered to be the easy
option however it would still leave unresolved why your secondary controller
is currently disabled. If you do choose to take this route make sure that you
check the jumpers on the CD-ROM and ensure that it is configured as a Slave
device after which you would need to plug it into the spare socket on the
cable to your hard disk. The only problem here is likely to be the internal
layout of your PC and if the hard disk is relatively low down and the CD-ROM
high up then I doubt that the IDE cable would be long enough.

Mike,
How do you know that my cd-rom is connected to my
secondary controller? And are you talking about the
cables that plug into my cd-rom? I believe I only have
two cables able to plug into my cd-rom. there is a large
one and then there is a smaller one that has the number 2
on it. Also why would it all work prior to downloading
WindowsME, I didn't change anything?

How do I know? Loop back to your first question - why can't Win Me see my
CD-ROM and the various answers you have since supplied. I would strongly
recommend as I have previously that you get a friend to help you with this
problem. Alternatively take your PC into your local PC repair shop.

I assume you're using Windows ME. If so, I had the same problem. You might want to check the 'Force Compatibility Mode Disk Access' setting in MSCONFIG (Advanced). It appears this should be *unchecked*, in order for CD drives to work.

For full details see the thread I raised for this "IDE Controller Error (Code 10)"
