View Full Version : Re: Can't re-install CD-RW

May 8th 04, 09:31 PM
Thank you, Jack. This is the most sensible sounding advice
I have gotten on this problem. The people at Gateway
(processor) and Philips have sent me a total of 9 answers
that sound like they never read the question.

When I Hot-Plug, the CD-RW gets recognized as a 'USB
Cable" attached to a SCSI controller. Windows wont even
try to read a new driver file from a floppy - it just says
there is nothing on the disk that relates to my hardware.

I have downloaded the "USB-WinMe.exe" file that you
suggested. Before I mess things up even worse, can you
tell me how to go about replacing the Windows drivers ?
Can I just try to find the files in Windows, delete them,
and then copy in the new ones ? Or does the fact that the
file is type 'exe' mean it is self-installing ?
PS: Do you know of a way to make Windows just 'keep' known
devices instead of re-finding them at every power-up ?

If hot plugging the CD-RW drive results in PNP identifying a " 'USB
Cable" attached to a SCSI controller", it may mean the firmware in the
drive is incorrect.
I recommend obtaining a replacement drive to test.

You can also test by Rebooting to Safe Mode and removing the drive in
Device Manager. Then use the Add New Hardware wizard to direct the
installation of the correct driver from a floppy or a CD. However, if
the drive insists on being identifed as the USB cable, it will fail
again.

Re: the "USB-WinMe.exe file", it is self-installing. Just run it and
all should be well, for USB 1.1.

I guess this is a loser. I have ordered a new CD-RW.
Thanks for trying...911
