Help "A device attached to the system is not functioning"

My computer was/is infected with a highjacker program. I
tried to remove the files that several sites say I should
and the files are not there but the program is.(ShopNav)
Now I tried to reinstall Windows and I can't access MSDOS.
I get the error message "A device attached to the system
is not functioning" Everything else works fine but is
slow. Any help would be appreicated.

I'm not certain I understand. You had a hijacker, you cleaned your system and
then decided to reinstall Win Me. Why? How? A reinstall is usually the very
last means of removing an unwanted guest if for no other reason than that it
can cause problems far far worse than before the reinstall if you don't clean
install. How are you attempting to access MSDOS? You can only do this from a
boot floppy or do you mean that the problems you see are when opening what is
called a DOS window in Win Me?

I tried to clean the system but I could not find the
hijakcer the files that the sites told me to look for were
not there. I tried to search for the files and i canlt
find them anywhere on my system. Everytime I hit the
search button in the internet explorer, I get a ShopNav
search engine and can't change to another search engine.
Everything I found said to reinstall windows that might
help since I could not find the files in which the
hijacker was installed. Now I cant reinstall windows, I
get an error message saying that "setup could not check
the hard drive and to restart maching , boot fron disk,
and run scandisk all from the command line. Tried that and
still could not install windows or any other program. Then
I tried to access the MSDOS prompt through
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM but I get an error "A device
attached to the system is not functioning"

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.

I am experiencing a similiar problem due to removal of a Trojan Virus. It evidently attached to files within Explorer and or Internet Explorer. I am unable to load software or reload Me.
I will anxioulsy await an answer to your question.

If all else fails and you continue to be unable to remove this pest download a
copy of HijackThis from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html).
Create a folder called hijackthis on C: and copy the file you downloaded to
that folder. Close as many applications as you can including all instances of
Internet Explorer and then run hijackthis.exe and post back the log, provided
that it isn't too long, to this thread, otherwise to the HijackThis Forum at
http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/ and hopefully this will enable someone to
identify the cause of your problem.
