SPRDSHEET QUESTION

[GLEN]

I know it must be simple answer:

when entering data in a spreadsheet for Windows ME and I
depress "Enter" key to return to Column "A". It goes to
only "Column B". Thanks for your help

It's supposed to go to Column B. Then if you enter info for column B it
goes to Column C... etc. it's called "data entry".

Unless you mean you enter the stuff for column A and the stuff gets
written to column B... now that's wrong.

I would like to enter data into column "B", and click on
the "return" key and return to column "A" for another row
of entries. But my return key does not return to the
first part of the spreadsheet but goes down one row
instead of the first column.

You might try reading the documentation on whatever spreadsheet package
it is you're using. Would be much more useful than I could.

As Rick implies, it *may* depend on the application.

FWIW - on my machine, with Excel:-
start in A1, tab (along) several cells and press return. Reverts to A2

but with MS Works 2000:-
start in A1, tab (along) several cells and press return. Reverts to Last
Used Column2

Don't know if there is any way of changing that behaviour.

Hi Noel, I'm not sure if that's THE answer. My understanding was that the OP
wanted to return to columnA, next row down.

The 'Down' option in Excel not only allows:
> start in A1, tab (along) several cells and press return. Reverts to A2
but also e.g. start in D4, tab (along) several cells and press return.
Reverts to D5

The 'Up' has a 'similar'(ish) property, whereas Left and Right just move
left and right.

But Works has an option to switch the Return option on or off and when it's
on, it just moves down to the next cell. When it's off, it does nothing.

with Excel, the focus remains with the active cell - and hitting [Return]
does the action requested *from that cell* (which is not necessarily where
the cursor is)
e.g.
In D4...
type "=A3+" without the quotes
click on G5
the apparent focus is G5 - but the true focus is still D4
Hit Return
on default settings, the focus will move to D5
