Hi!

I have problems installing Direct X 9.0b. When I install
it (from Windows Update), it seems to me that is it never
really installed! I have a game called Project Entropia.
That game needs Direct X 9.0b to run. Each time I've
installed Direct X and restarted my computer, it still
tells me that Direct X 9.0b is not installed and that I
have version 7.1. I check the Installation History (in
Windows Update) and it tells me that I have installed it
sucsessfully!
Please help me out!

Thanks In Advance,
Doug

Download the Dx 9.0b runtime and install it yourself. It is also listed on
the Dx web site as the redistributable.

I have tried that too. When it has finnished extracting
files and starting to copy them, it tells me a file has
not been extracted. Then the installation has failed.

This sounds like one of two things (or both!)
You have Norton software installed?
Your System Restore is non-functional?

Here's the first.......
Have you been running with the Quack?
Are you running Norton System Quack - - errr - Doctor?
If so, then read on......

You may have up to 32,000 empty OEM*.INF files sitting in your
c:\Windows\INF folder, which prevents any program putting a legitimate *.INF
file in there (it also slow your system down to stop, trying to read them
and sort the [non-existent] contents!).
You need to DELETE all 0byte (and ONLY the 0byte) OEM*.INF files.
look here for information on how to do that , and how to prevent it
happening again (i.e. TURN OFF NORTON SYSTEM DOCTOR - unless you are
actively troubleshooting something)

The Symantec site:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nunt.nsf/docid/2000120915010309&src=n

also
"Computer Stops Responding (Hangs) During Setup, Installing Updates, or
Adding New Hardware"
also
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q301540
(which contains the fix for your problem in the NOTE under the patch
description)
Phone your Local MS office, and tell them your problem quoting Q301540 -
they'll either send you the patch, or give you a one-use password, for the
cost of the call.

Here's a variation of the first!
If You have Norton Anti-Virus (as it laughingly describes that
poorly-written ME-killer) installed, ALWAYS prevent it running when updating
or installing programs from safe sources - after scanning the installer!

Here's the second....
Check the stauts of your System restore - go her, and follow the
instructions for a test of SR - and report back

Good Luck
