Hi A family member of mines has Windows Me they turned
it off one night and now it will not come back on it
powers up and runs a bios check then it displays a
message "Verifying DMI Pool Data" then on a black screen
it displays "Disk I\O error" "Replace the disk and then
press and key" then if I hit enter I get "disk boot
failure, insert system disk and press enter" I've make a
ME boot disk and I have cold booted with that and it went
through lots of things then displayed on a black
screen "A:\" and if I hit enter I get the A:\ again what
should I do keep in mined they didn't have an updated
version of mcafee virus on this PC

Sounds like your Hard Drive is failing, see:- "Error
Message "Verifying DMI Pool Data" Occurs and the Computer
Is Unavailable" http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=kb;en-us;287553 Try running scandisk in Real Mode
DOS, booting from your Win Me Startup (floppy) Disk.
Select option 4) Minimal and at the A:\> prompt, type:
scandisk c: Then press return. (Note the space between
the k and the c and note the colon : after the c) If it
will let you, progress with the tests (depends how bad
the disk is). If errors are reported and scandisk offers
to repair, decline - and also decline a surface scan.
Treat the disk with caution and hope that you will able
to read and copy your important files at a later time.
Only attempt any further testing if/when you can afford
to lose any data. (Urgent preparation for 'sods' Law is
strongly recommended) Good luck Mart

Reply:
I've don't that scandisk and this is what I got please
inform Me on what this means
Data error while reading the SAT
Disk error prevents scandisk from fixing this drive
There are still errors on this drive view log or exit
and I tried to view log and got this
Scandisk didn't perform any test File system surface
scan
File allocation no problems
There are still errors on drive c

Please advise on what to do know

Thanx Martin

OK - my guess is that the report said FAT not SAT

However, as I said before, sounds like your Hard Drive is failing. Treat
your disk with caution. You *could* lose your data for ever. Under the
circumstances, you may be better taking you PC to your local 'computer
store' to see if they can help you recover the data and/or repair/replace
the disk.

If your data is not important to you (i.e. you are happy to lose it) and you
are prepared to 'have a go' to see if you can repair it yourself, then come
back and someone here should be able to help with the next steps.

Please stick to THIS thread - otherwise we can't keep track of this
conversation.

no the data is not that important so what steps can I
take to see if I can fix it my self I would like to learn
some new stuff I'm willing to have a go at it.

You are probably best trying Noel's advice from an 'elsewhere' thread at
this point, although the fact that the FAT (File Allocation Table) is
probably damaged doesn't bode well :-

"Almost certainly your HD is dying. Find out what make it is (may appear on
the DMI screen), and download the test utility from the manufacturer's
website. Create the boot disk for the utility, and run it to see what it
reports"

See how you go, and come back with the results. There *may* be a further
step, if the disk is not damaged beyond repair, but the manufacturers test
utility should tell you that.

I don't think that applies here, Rick (although it's a nice link - thanks!).
The OP is able to get beyond the DMI updates - and getting instead an 'Disk
I/O ' error, which means that disk is present - but that for whatever
reason, a number of attempts to read the MBR/FAT have failed.

It's possible that either an 'FDISK /MBR' or a 'SYS C:' would work - but
they both carry dangers if the system is either dual-booting, has overlay
software installed, has Go-Back installed, or a number of other non-standard
booting types.

ok I did the test form the maker of this hard drive the
DFT and it checked the disk to see it it could do a disk
sectoer repair and was unable to so I had to clean the
whole drive and it told me before that I would have to
reinstall the operartion system. But there computer came
with no system disk. My question is should they but and
upgrade to Xp disk. will that work or do they now that to
buy the whole xp platform. please inform of witch one to
buy casue I know well have been told one comes wit many
disk and my upgrade came with less than that. once the CD
case is opened it can not bereturned and I don't want
them getting burned.

In theory, all machines must come with a way to reinstall the Operating
system - this can vary from a real MS OS CD, through to a compressed backup
set on the HD which needs decompressing onto a CD before use.
If the latter was the case on your relative's machine, you're going to have
to contact the OEM and see if you can screw a new CD out of them.

Upgrading to/Installing XP is possible - but run the update compatibility
checker first, after reinstalling the original OS (or any OS from win95 up)
In these circumstances, without the original OS available, you'll have to
get the full edition (for a new machine).
