This message indicates that one of the following has happened:

1. The files needed to start loading Windows have been deleted or
damaged.

2. The BIOS setup parameters for the hard drive have been changed,
meaning that files cannot be located correctly.

3. The hard drive has sufferred some physical damage or a partial
failure of some kind.

It is important to determine which of these is the actual cause of
your problem, as applying the wrong fix can in fact make the situation
even worse (e.g. if the actual cause is #2 and you apply the fix for
cause #1).

If you have important data on the hard drive you should probably take
the computer to a repair service and have them check it out and fix
the actual problem.

Good luck

Ron ,
how do you determine which is the actual cause?
could this be caused by overheating?

my son's pc has had the same error twice in the past 2
days. each time we turned it off and let it cool down some
and tried again and it worked. we had a new hard drive
installed under warranty a 5 months ago and i believe that
drive failed due to over heating. compaq did not see fit
to install casing fans in the model he has. we had a fan
installed recently but today removed it because it was off
balanced and vibrating.

Auni,
if you find out what caused your problem please let me
know. i am concerned even if it is from the heat that
harddrive may have been damaged and damage accumulates.
but if it is something else i want to know that also.

thanks,
charlie
