A new copy of notepad.exe can be extracted from the Win Me cab set using
MSConfig | General - Extract File... and following the prompts.
Alternatively, locate win_17.cab either in the Win9x folder on your Win Me CD
or in ..\windows\options\install or ..\cabs, double click to open, select
notepad.exe and drag to your windows folder.

See MS KB129605 - "HOW TO: Extract Original Compressed Windows Files"

It is possible that your notepad.exe is missing due to your having received
and subsequently cleaned the W32/QAZ trojan/worm. In which case look in your
windows folder for the file note.com and rename it notepad.exe and you should
hopefully be back in business.

Mike, As long as you are so helpful, how does one clear
the Windows temp folder ?? and is there a place that
clears it automatically and can you change how often it
does that??

Programs that use the Temp folder are supposed to clear it themselves...
occasionally that doesn't happen; the DiskCleanup tool can help you in
that regard:

Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/DiskCleanup

Unless you have a security reason that you need to wipe it clean all the
time, just use DiskCleanup before you run Scandisk/Defrag every week or so.

Not Mike here.....but there is nothing to clean it out automatically. Go to
Windows Explorer and highlight all that you want to get rid of and hit the
Delete key. I clear mine out manually every day.
