Error in MFC42DLL after installing Palm Software

I get the message "Palm caused an Error in MFC42DLL, Palm
will now close" when I try to access the Palm Desk Top.
When I click ok Palm closes. This software was installed
recently as an upgrade. When I contacted Palm support
they say it is a Windows problem and I need to contact
Microsoft. I can't find a reference to MFC42DLL in the
Microsoft FAQ;s or help. Any help or suggestions would be
appreciated.

Just a WAG but check your system for multiple copies of mfc42.dll and rename
to mfc42.old all copies other than that in the windows\system folder which
should be version 6.0.8665.0, sized 995,383 bytes and with a modified date of
8 June 2000. You can check these details by selecting the file in Explorer,
right clicking and selecting Properties.
