View Full Version : cant run almost any .exe

June 5th 04, 07:05 PM
can not run almost anything on my 98 machine
boots up, i can run explorer most other apps include
system tools tell me "this .exe is not a win32 app"
control panel untilies complain accessing a "device path,
for file is denied"

Something is corrupted and I am trying to recover - any
ideas? I have my win98 upgrade still but machine does not
want to boot from it and I can not run add\remove\repair.

????

let me know if you have any words of wisdom. thx

Follow the basic rules:
1. Was this a sudden change following
something you installed?
2. Have you checked for viruses etc?
3. When did you last SCANDISK and
DEFRAG and delete junk files?

Then post again with details, e.g.
does Win98 boot normally?

There is a file somewhere on the net called
EXEFIX.REG which rectify the registry keys.
---------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@="exefile"
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile]
@="Application"
"EditFlags"=hex:d8,07,00,00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open]
@=""
"EditFlags"=hex:00,00,00,00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHan dlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHan dlers\{86F19A00-42A0-1069
-A2E9-08002B30309D}]
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\DefaultIcon]
@="%1"
----------------------------------------------------------
Wait for further advice from more experienced
users. If you want to try this file you must make a backup of your registry
and should know how to restore it. If you are not familiar
with importing of .reg files into registry, please do not try it.
You have to copy the entries between the lines
into notepad and save as exe.reg file and import it into the registry or
double click the
saved exe.reg file and click merge.
Reboot.

Hi,
Here is a Registry fix that's a little safer than editing the Registry
manually (we're not all as brave as AAH <g>)
http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/reg_files.html

Scroll down the page, and look for "Repair .EXE Association".

Thanks Dan,
Feels good coming from you. I just hate to see someone messin' with the
Registry when they don't have to. Take care my friend.
