View Full Version : Re-install of IE6

Noel
May 14th 04, 12:52 PM
I have a laptop that recently had WinMe reinstalled due to
an error.
Now, I cannot performt the Windows patch that upgrades
from IE5.5 to IE6. The install will download and execute
but gives me an error message that it was not completed.
I tried the MS bulletin about un-installing IE6, but I
could not complete it. It was not accurate. I had un-
install option for IE and could not perform the command
line function, there was no log.txt file.

Any suggestions?

Reinstalling ME over itself? - your only option may be to completely remove
and reinstall IE

Look here - and please, ask questions first so that you know exactly what
you're doing!

1. go to my computer-tools-folder options-view:
-select "show hidden files and folders", click apply-ok
2. create a temp folder named "Old Uninstall".
3. go to folder C;/Program Files/Internet
Explorer/Uninstall Information.
4. now edit-select all-cut all files.
5. open "Old Uninstall" folder and paste the files.
6. you will now be able to install all the troublesome
components.
7. if all works as expected, you can delete the "Old
Uninstall" folder. suggest you keep folder a few days,
then delete.
8. this should fix IE6 install for you, have a nice day.

Thanks, I will try this once I get a full installation
copy of IE6.

Is the IE6 from the microsoft page ok? This one will
execute and then download the applicable parts during the
installation process.

Thanks

Okay- this is what I have done so far.....

I followed the instructions from the webpage.
I have uninstalled IE and rebooted, waited five minutes
and rebooted again.
Upon this reboot I get a message that states
"Explorer has caused an error in Browseui.dll Explorer
will now close." Once I hit "Close" I can do nothing else
with out getting this message- that includes the "Start"
button too.

What now?

TIA

Browseui shouldn't be being used at all - since AFAIK you've uninstalled it
with IERadicator!
Do you have Active Desktop enabled?

What happens if you boot to Safe Mode?

If you get the same error, try Method 1 in the following link
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=293174

except when it says to go to Add/Remove programs (Step 6), instead start the
installer for IE6 that you've downloaded.

Safe mode Booting: Same Error Message

Using Method 1: I cannot access ANYTHING on the CPU
without the message appearing.

I believe that active desktop was enabled. But now I get
these error messages everytime I try to do anything. I
cannot even use shortcut keys to access programs or other
things.

TIA

Can you get to DOS prompt with a Win ME floppy?
If not, then you need to change the boot order in the BIOS Setup so that you
boot from the floppy before accessing the HD.

Yes it did.

But I followed kb-289799 and was able to run your
suggested program with a successful outcome.
I have just finished up the install of the last critical
patch.

So far there is no issues using the IE6 for the limited
amount that I have.
I will keep you informed here

Thank you for all your help!!!

this weekend to reflect your problems, and the fix.

Good work! - well done.
