Noel,

Thanks for your reply. One major problem - this PC has
never had a connection to the Internet. I will uninstall
AOL and see what happens.

I'll report back.

You don't need to be connected to the internet to get
spyware/virus/hijack!!!
ANY connection to the outside world is enough!!!
(floppy/CD/DVD/fridge/phone/whatever!!!)

Why install AOL if the box is never connected? - 'Companion' is almost
always an AOL app.

If the box is connected to the residential network, it's connected tot he
Internet (whether you can see it obviously or not!)

Is this PC connected to *anything*?? - are people allowed to slot in their
own floppies???

I attempted to uninstall AOL and it wasn't installed. It
shows up in the "Add/Remove Programs" box, but it's not
actually installed.

This computer is not on any type of network and never has
been. But yes, people can use their own floppies.

I had previously attemped to uninstall Me and put on Win
98 (because the Me disk is nowhere to be found), but since
the uninstall files weren't originally installed, I can't
do anything.

What else can I do?

OK - have you installed and run the AV yet?

I'd try installing AOL and then uninstalling it - if nothing else, it should
update your version of IE<g>

Boot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Display Adapters
Remove ALL Monitors
Remove ALL Mouse devices
Remove ALL error-flagged devices
Remove ALL entries in the 'Other Devices' branch
Reboot to normal mode - Windows will reinstall required drivers

See where that gets you, and post back.

Try getting the Security Updates CD from Microsoft - use that to install the
security patches
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/

You can download a boot disk maker from www.bootdisk.com (get the ME OEM
one - it's the same as would be created on your system) run the file, and
create the floppy.

look here for instructions on how to clean up your startup axis, preventing
unnecessary programs loading
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php

post back with findings/results/questions

Good Luck

I can't update the virus protection because we don't have
an update or a contract or even a NIC or modem in this
machine.

I removed all the devices, they reinstalled themselves
when I rebooted, and nothing changed except the wallpaper.

I got the security update CD, but wasn't able to install
security patches. The PC won't do much of anything, and
the mouse still doesn't work.

download install and run the free AVG anti-virus from www.grisoft.com.

if you can't get that to run, then you may need to use a DOS anti-virus. -
www.f-prot.com has a good one, which is free.
