Ive got two computers I need to network one with ME and
the other with xP. The host is ME and the client XP

the network is set up using the ME system as a gateway for
the client to access the internet. What I mean is that the
modem is pluged into the ME system and then the ME system
connected to a router with network Card + Cat5 cable in
port 1. The client is then connected to the router also in
port 2. the ME system can only see itself and the other
computer in my network places when it is connected to the
internet. The XP system can see itself and the ME system
regardless of net connection.

When the internet is not connected they can both Ping
eachother still even tho the ME system cannot see itself
and the XP system in network places.

The DHCP was turned off on the router to try and allow the
systems to access eachothers files and this worked to
begin with. However it doesnt now. When the ME system trys
to access the XP computer through network places to access
files it gets greated with the lue screen of Death

The main problem is getting the computers to share an
internet connection. The ME sytem had its internet sharing
turned on and the internet was still working on the ME
host computer.

However the internet stopped working for no reason about
half an hour later and it was that the DNS settings were
faulty. e.g you could access a page with the IP address
but not by typing www.etc etc. This was sorted by having
to change the DNS settings on the internet connection by
ringing my ISP he also said to turn the internet sharing
as this would change an IP address(which one i dont no if
anyone can tell me then it would be helpful.)After this I
restarted the computer and the net was working again. Now
is the problem of getting the computers to be able to
access eachother thru windows and getting the internet
working on both PC `s

any help would be thankful this is me g/fs parents house
and im really getting it in the neck!!!!

Probably because the router has not been reconfigured as a switch.

Turning the router DHCP off is necessary to avoid conflict between the
router and ICS. Otherwise both will be trying to manage the LAN IP
addresses, and the LAN will become very confused.

To share an Internet connection between two computers, you need a device to
route packets between the Internet and the LAN. Either a router, or a
computer with an Internet Connection Sharing program will do the job; but
you can't have a router in place at the same time as ICS.

Set the router DHCP to off. You may have to do some other configurations
within the router to effectively convert it to a switch, but I've never done
it, so I can't tell you how.
