"Too many network connections"

Small peer to peer network with static IP addresses.
Windows 98
Windows 98SE
Windows XP Home
Windows ME

The Windows ME system was just formatted and rebuilt - so there should be no
wierdness.

The Windows ME system uses files on the Windows XP Home system.
Sometimes opening My Network Places takes forever!
Sometimes we get a message "Too many network connections" when there are
actually very few.

Any suggestions?

Hey Fred,
Sorry that I can't help you out but I was wandering if you
you may be able to help me out. It sounds like you are
already a bit smarter than me, you atleast have your
computers hooked up and configured.
I am trying to set up a 2 computer network at home. One
computer is running 98SE and the other is running ME. Both
computers came with built n ethernet cards. I thought I
would be able to have the computers communicate with one
another by using an ethernet cable and running the setup
wizard.
I'll leave it at that for now. If you would be able to
bestow any of your knowledge upon me I would greatly
appreciate it

Windows xp home can only accept 5 network connections to its resources
at any one time. Your other operating systems can do 10.

Hardly an UPgrade from win9x eh? :(

If you are connecting them directly (ie no hub or switch) then you
need a *crossover* ethernet cable.

Jim,

There are only 4 computers on the network, including the XP system. There
are also 2 local printers that are shared. How many is that? Isn't it 3
network connections?

Nope - the printers may each use one, and each of the PC's may use more than
one at a time (depending on the applications running)

This rather depends surely on whether the printers are network printers each
with their own IP address or whether they are printers hanging off one or
other of the networked PCs.

Mike and Noel,

Thanks! Well, as I said, the printers are local / shared.

The drives on the XP machine are mapped on others. Does a mapped drive
constitute a "network connection". There are a total of 4 IP addresses
including the XP machine.

I've never seen this particular error message before and I've worked on lots
of similar networks - including my own right here. This one has up to 5
computers on it and a network printer with its own IP address. Not a
problem.
