View Full Version : Strange Networking problem with Win ME

Background - I had a network setup before I moved
consisting of 4 machines running
Win98SE/Win98SE/WinME/WinXP Home. I had them all running
through a Linksys router connected to a cable modem.
Everything worked great.

Now - I have the same computers, but now I'm connected to
a D-Link router connected to a DSL modem. Everything
works accept the Win ME computer. I can't use any sort
of Explorer when connected to the network. Windows
Explorer never pops up no matter how I try to start it.
Internet Explorer begins to load (draws the window
border), but then stops. Either of these locks up the
task bar and I have to use the task manager to shutdown.
Nothing in the task manager is listed as not responding,
but I have to click 'end task' for two unknown processes
before it shuts down.

Strange part - I can ping the router and other machines
from ME. I can ping the ME machine from any other. I can
even connect to the shared drives and put files on the ME
machine from the other machines. I cannot connect to
anything from the ME machine though.

I've reinstalled the network drivers and Winsock2. I
even ran system restore to a point where I knew for sure
the system was working. So far nothing has fixed the
problem. If I'm not connected to the network, both
Windows and Internet Explorer work as expected. Any
ideas?

How about go to nescape.com and download netscape brouser
or go to mozilla.com and get firefox.

If you test one of these brousers it would indicate if the problem is in
explorer or in the rest of your setup.

check internet options, connections tab. There are three
choices in upper half (dialups)
* never use this (dialup)
* always use this (dialup)
* use this (dialup)when LAN not available.

I'd think you'd want the third. maybe you've already checked this..

I am having a very similar bizzare problem. When I am connected to the
network windows me is not happy. ALl network function seems to be
there but explorer (as in Windows Explorer not Internet Explorer)
wants to crash continually if I ctrl alt del and end task explorer I
can restore windows functionality long enough to launch a program but
shortly after launching explorer will freeze again. I can open IE by
clicking the task bar shortcut, this causes "explorer" to hang so I
ctrl alt del end task which allows IE to finish loading and then I can
surf the web no problem. I can even explore my hard drive from IE but
if i try to right click on "my computer" and "Explore" I get hung up.
Same goes for any icon on the desk top. THe start button will freeze
up if I try to start something there too.

Any help you can offer would be apprieciated

THanks
