View Full Version : Wireless Interface Present / Can't PING Out

Fred Marshall
May 31st 04, 07:48 PM
Windows ME
Linksys wireless
WPC11 V.3 wireless PC card and wired ethernet interfaces.
Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless DSL Router

Wired interface seems fine into the router, LAN and internet.
(Other computers on the LAN are fine).

Wireless interface:
Is connected.
A few feet from AP / good signal / quality.
In a remote location. *Very* unlikely eavedropped.

Wireless interface can sometimes get to the internet / sometimes not.
Wireless interface cannot ping the gateway / router 192.168.1.1 at all.
Response is "Request timed out"
Can ping 127.0.0.1
Can ping 192.168.1.196 the IP of the computer
Wireless interface *can* be pinged just fine from other computers on the LAN
via the router.

I have deleted and reinstalled the wireless interface a number of times.
I have deleted and reininstalled its TCP/IP protocol.

It seems this started when I reinstalled the wireless interface. I
downloaded the latest driver / software for the WPC11 v3 from Linksys and
installed it.

I have run the Networking Wizard just in case.

The only difference I see between the wireless interface and
the wired shows
Primary WINS Server (blank)
the wireless shows
Primary WINS Server 201.204.36.10
I'm trying to not use WINS so the last entry puzzles me. Is it a clue?

Any suggestions?

I'm pretty new at this stuff, but had a similar problem w/same router. It
just kind of flipped out one night and I couldn't ping it either - the whole
thing was screwy. First make sure you have the right firmware. Download
any update from Linksys page and do Firmware Upgrade through http setup
page. I think there is a driver update for this router as well, so install
that, too. Write down any settings you're not sure of being able to
replace, etc. (or maybe use the backup utility in the setup http page - but
you might backup something that's causing the problem - I really don't
know - you should probably use caution just to be on the safe side). You
can always do Start>Run>winipcfg then click 'more info' to get alot of the
stuff - release and renew all for current settings.

OK - This part sounds really stupid, but it worked (Linksys Tech Support had
me do it - I just had to ask them if there was a magic word or some strange
chant that went with this little trick...hehehe).

Here goes: With everything still plugged into the back of the router, press
the 'reset' button on the back of the router and hold in in. Unplug and
then re- plug in the power cord, counting slowly to five between each
plug/unplug THREE times - all the while *holding the reset button*

When you plug it in the fourth time, release the reset button and then check
and restore all your settings on the setup pages. (No user name, password
is admin).

I swear this worked on mine...I have no idea why, but maybe it'll help!

Just a suggestion - good luck,

SuZ

Fred,

Please provide ipconfig information for the problematic computer, and for one
other computer (that can ping the problematic computer successfully).
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

Please provide static route tables for the problematic computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "route print >c:\route.txt" into the command window -
Open c:\route.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

I found a post that suggested continually pinging the DNS. In my case, the
DNS is external of course. So, I tried that.
Guess what? I can ping the DNS server!

And then, I can access the internet successfully.

However, I can't ping anything on the LAN.
Things on the LAN can ping this one though.....

So, I'm going to guess that there's something very wrong with the BEFW11S4
ver 4 even with the latest firmware. But, I can't rule out the host
computer with the wireless PC card in it.
