Desktop icons disappearing

Can anybody please help me out with my desktop icons
disappearing from my desktop? It just started happening
to me. Another issue is when I was playing pool on Yahoo
games, all of the balls on the table disappeared as well.
Any suggestions on how I can fix this problem?
