Hi there

I have a Compaq Presario that uses Windows ME. When I log
onto the internet using Earthlink after 30 seconds I get a
error message saying "keyword has caused an error in
MFC42DLL Keyword will close, if you continue to
experience problems try restarting your computer"
Other times instead of keyword it could say Iexplore,
Rundll etc.
I talked with a tech at Earthlink and he said I have a
corrupted file on the operating system and I need to
reinstall my operating system. But I only have a recovery
disc that came with my computer, which I think Windows ME
is on. I would love to be able to fix my operating system
so I can continue to the internet but keep all my
exisiting files and software on my computer. Can you help
me??
Thank you
Lynne

If you need to reinstall, the primary important thing you
need is the WinME install key. It should either be in
your Compaq docs, or is often on a sticker stuck on one
of the sides of the system case.

Once you have the install key, you should boot your
system from a floppy boot disk, then go to
c:\windows\setup then type (setup) at the c:\

Reinstalling will not delete any of your current files,
it will only fix any corrupted files.

Do not use the recovery disks unless you wish to wipe
everything and start all over again. Also, do not format
the disk as this will also wipe everything.

I haven't time to tell you all the details atm, but this
will give you some info on how to proceed and what to
look for further. Good luck.

Reinstalling ME is VERY RARELY required.

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:

http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

Try BHODemon - from http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/bhod/

Download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

(thanks to Graham Womack for the following)
Do all this in Safe Mode.......
Make a Restore Point - just in case it gets worse.
Using Regedit, search for 'Safeguard'. Make a note of the dll name (if
there's an entry at all).
Run BHODemon. Look for the same dll name The 'Details' key should give you
more information about when the entries were loaded. Disable the registry
entry.
Search your hard drive for the dll file (should be in Windows\System).
Rename it and a similar named lib file - change the extensions.
Reboot, cross your fingers and try 'My Computer'

IF you really want to reinstall ME....
Do an over-the-top install from the HD - look here for detailed
instructions.
