when opening IE (ver 5.5) -- recieve dial up connection
info and it connects to ISP fine -- then gives page cannot
be displayed error.

(Netscape says unable to create network socket connection)

Laptop was originally configured to dial up AOL and ISP
Added WAN and DSL and still had dial up option
Moved off of WAN/DSL and started recieving these errors.

Any help ideas appreciated!

Have you had a virus/spyware infestation?
try this....
you may have spyware
Such errors are often caused by spyware - download AdAware from
www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

also run the LSPFix from here
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
