I get this vx2.dll error message and I can't open
explorer, let alone anything, like Search, or Control
Panels etc. And the Explorer icon has superimposed itself
on most of my desktop icons. wussup? Need to reinstall ME
disc?

VX2.DLL
You have picked up a parasite.

For details see:
Parasite:Transponder http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/Transponder.html, and,
http://www.cexx.org/vx2.htm which states:

"If you have this unwanted guest you probably have others as well. Get a
copy of AdAware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com, install it, run it and
download the latest updates, then scan your system and clean everything it
finds. When complete, restart the system and scan it again. Keep scanning,
cleaning and restarting until the system tests clean. Some stubborn pests
may require a restart in Safe Mode to clean them if they persist through
several scan/clean cycles.

You may also want to get the CoolWeb Shredder from here since it targets one
specific, often-changing spyware program - see
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

CWShredder can be downloaded from either:
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip
or
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

In addition I would also recommend that you also download and use Patrick
Kolla's SpyBot S & D which can be found at http://www.safer-networking.org/
since SpyBot will often pick up parasites missed by AdAware.

Thanks for that, I have run Spybot and it seems to have=20
solved the problem. Now I still have those ubiquitous IE=20
icons all over my desktop, covering the original icons. Is=20
this a symptom of the parasite?

What you are seeing isn't a parasite but rather probably the result of a
corrupt icon cache.

Look for and delete the file SHELLICONCACHE It has no extension). This file,
in the windows folder, is a hidden file so to see it when using Explorer it is
first essential to enable the viewing of such files (Explorer | Tools | Folder
Options | View and check the button "Show hidden files and folders" in the
section "Hidden files and folders"). Reboot and the icon cache will
automatically be rebuilt and hopefully fix the problem. If it doesn't the
size of the cache possibly needs to be increased.
