Response to ?s/suggestions re Explorer error; Dev Mgr

Trying again. No response to my 7/5 post. Would really
appreciate help regarding problem. Again, I'm a "newby".
If I have offended, please tell me what I've done.

My post dated 7/5 was in response to questions/suggestions
from people in this newsgroup. The original post dated
6/30 had 21 entries and I couldn't follow it anymore so
started over at where system is currently. Thank you all
for your earlier help.

Am now able to get into safe mode without errors. Now
working on normal boot problems.

I get the following when doing a normal boot...
Explorer An error has occurred in your program. To
keep working anyway, click Ignore.... To quit this program
click close.

Clicking on Ignore does nothing. Clicking on close in the
error window takes me to another error....
Explorer has caused an error in GDI.exe. Explorer will
now close.

I click on "Close", get "Close Program" window. Nothing
shown running there. Click on "Shut Down" and system does
shut down okay.

Mart believed above error may be problem with hardware
drivers... advised me to check out Device Manager in safe
mode for duplicates. There were a lot. I deleted every
duplicate that I was permitted to delete. Did a normal
boot and I actually made it to the desktop once it ran
through the add new hardware messages. However, could not
repeat the successful boot even though I went back into
safe mode and deleted dups again! :( Duplicates keep
reappearing in Device Manager. Examples: Under Hard Disk
Controller, Primary and Secondary IDE controller (dual
fifo) entries appear three times respectively. VIA Bus
Master PCI IDE Controller appears twice. Under System
Devices, ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering appears four
times. And, there are others.

Also, I went into msconfig and deselected the check boxes
one at a time and tried to boot to normal. I was
successful except when I had "Load static VxDs" or "Load
startup group items" checked. With either one of these
selected, I got errors on normal boot.

WRT your problems with the Startup groups in MSCONFIG, look here for
instructions on how to clean up your startup axis, preventing unnecessary
programs loading

Hi Jane, missed a couple of your posts and didn't find you until now -
although getting 'heavy', you should have stuck with the original thread
which I was 'watching'. I'll 'watch' this one in future.

However, now we are here, let's just consider a couple of points.

Firstly, take note of Noel's advice (elsewhere) and 'tidy-up' your start-up
axis.

But I am still somewhat concerned with the excessive number of duplicates in
Device Manager in Safe Mode. Be sure to install the correct latest drivers
when you re-boot after 'Removing' stuff in DevMan in Safe Mode. Don't
necessarily choose the 'default' option. If you've got the original drivers
(as supplied by your OEM or device manufacturer), then use them!! Especially
your video adapter.

Just check your Start-up folder for 'suspect' applications - which brings me
back to Noel's advice.

Hello, Mart:
Wanted to let you know that I am working on the
suggestions you and Noel have given me. Wish I could work
on this PC full time, but I can't...so will take a few
days to research everything on recommended websites, etc.
Am planning to research valid startup and registry entries
and remove spyware and viruses. I am pleased to tell you
I can now work in normal mode and use the CD drive so this
is a big help. Still cannot access the web from that PC
so it is a pain you know where. I can, however, copy
stuff to a CD on my other PC and take it to the problem
PC. :)

I understand about the device manager issue and consider
it to be a serious concern. Unfortunately, my friend's
son lost all of the original HP disks that came with the
PC. This includes the original drivers for the
peripherals. They can't be ordered anymore. He only
brought me the CPU. I'm using other peripherals which I
didn't think would be a problem, but now I'm not so sure.
I hope I can still download drivers from websites. That's
my plan.

I am tackling one group of problems at a time. Will fix,
make sure PC is still working as good or better than
before (fingers crossed), and then go to the next group.

VxD problems are towards the bottom of my list.

I'll post again in a few days to let you know outcome.
