getting rid of items in system tray

Hi,

Is it possible to get rid of some items in the system
tray so that they don't load up on startup? Are there
some items that really need to be there and I shouldn't
touch or are all items removeable from the system tray?

It's the other way round. :-) Stop the application from loading when you
boot the PC and you then won't have it in the systray.

Method 1: Much to be preferred. Configure the application concerned so that
it doesn't start each time you boot your system. Sometimes this setting can
be quite difficult to find and can be buried quite deep in the programs
options, setup or configuration menus.

Method 2: You can use MSConfig (Start, Run, enter MSConfig in the box and
click OK), open the Startup tab and uncheck those applications you don't want
to load when you boot your PC. However I strongly urge you to check the
reason for why some of these entries are there as unchecking some of the
entries placed there when you installed Win Me are essential to the safe
running on the operating system.

A good place to look to for advice as to which programs need to be run at
startup is Pacman's site where he lists what should definitely be retained and
which can be safely removed from the startup axis
(http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm). Reducing such applications
and only starting them when required can free up significant resources.

Have a look at these sites for help with programs running at start up.

A good process viewer will tell you everything that is running, to include
background processes. Try Process Explorer, free from
www.sysinternals.com
..
CTRL-ALT-DEL will bring up the End Task window, however, it will not show
every running process. Most apps can be disabled from within the app
itself by using Properties or Settings or Options......the best way to
disable an app.
