Selective Startup

My father recently installed Norton Internet Security. He then had Comcast
Broadband internet run to his computer, along with the software to run it.
Now everything runs slowly, and a box pops up after a reboot, that is titled
"System Configuration Utility." The message in the box says, "You are using
the selective startup for troubleshooting your system."
Does anyone know how to correct this problem?

This message means that you have an unchecked entry in the Startup tab of
MSConfig (The System Configuration Utility you mention). This is only a
problem if you haven't unchecked any items, however in most cases items have
been intentionally unchecked so as to prevent them being launched each time
you boot the PC. All you need do is click the box to acknowledge the message
and not to display it again (until next you use MSConfig).

In English, you have to go to Start, Run, Type Msconfig,
and go back to Normal Startup if all the boxes in the
Selective Startup are checked.

My tech guy unclicked one of the boxes to check something
there and I was getting the message until we went back and
changed it.

Many users intentionally have unchecked entries in MSConfig | Startup. They
do not need to do as you suggest, instead they simply need to check the box to
acknowledge they are in selective startup and they will not see the message
again, or at least not until after they next use MSConfig.

English maybe but IMO the content was bad advice.

The problem with Cathe's post was that s/he appeared to be saying that running
with selective startup was a problem that needed to be corrected and that the
user should use MSConfig and check all the boxes to go back to Normal startup.
Selective Startup is NOT a problem and often what the user intended. Thus all
they need to do is check the box to acknowledge they are using selective
startup so as not to see it again until they next use MSConfig.
