BTC PS2 wheel mouse model M370.

I bought a wheel mouse for a P2 Win98 computer. The mouse says it is
compatible back to win 95 & up. It is a very cheap but probably a
very standard mouse.

All buttons work like they are supposed to including "pressing" the
wheel as a button - but not "scrolling" the wheel.. I believe there
was a wheel mouse driver that worked on this computer before, but
after a Windows 98 re-install & also an install of a non--wheel mouse,
the wheel doesn't work (tried another too that came with my XP
system).

There is a choice of a BTC driver to load in the mouse driver section,
but it says USB mouse. I looked at other mouse drivers there, and saw
am IBM driver with the word "wheel" in it. I went to enter it in,
chancing it would work, but Win 98 gave me a warning & said there will
be a conflict if I load this driver etc etc., so I canceled & now I am
asking here.

Win 98 should detect a new mouse plugged in, correct? But it does not
detect this one.

I've searched with Google for this BTC M370 driver, but came up empty.
I have a feeling there should be a standard scroll wheel driver ???

Any input appreciated. This Win 98 computer is a 2nd computer I
bought just for a little 2 computer home network, mainly used for
Internet access.

I have
start
settings
folder options
view
mouse settings
scroll wheel

with choices from 0 - 9 lines and page per click, when I first added the wheel
mouse it was set on zero and I had to alter it

Ok sorry about this, I didn't crosspost correctly, so I am showing
this response from another Win 98 newsgroup where I got a better
response than I did here in this newsgroup.

Thanks for the replies.

I have not booted up in safe mode (don't know how to do it yet in Win
98, as I am new to it on the 2nd computer). But I don't think I need
to boot in safe mode (??) When I go to control panel\system, I can
see categories & drivers loaded there. I see categories for
"keyboard", "monitor", etc etc. But surprisingly, there is no "mouse"
listed.

I have sent an inquiry to BTC, the makers of the wheel mouse, as to
which driver I need to use. But I think I have a separate problem,
because as I just mentioned, "mouse" is not present when listing
devices, nor does Win 98 auto detect this PS/2 wheel mouse.
(& to the person who suggested loading an "M$" driver - nothing there
like that to choose from).

& repeating what I said in my original post: When I was going to take
a chance and try to add the closest driver I could find listed in
"add/remove hardware", I chose "IBM" & it's "scroll point PS2" (only
IBM mouse listed). Windows 98 then told me when I tried to add it:
"you are going to have a conflict", so I stopped. So I am thinking
(as the reply mentions above) that I need to remove whatever mouse
driver is loaded 1st, and then manually add one.. But like I said the
"mouse" category is strangely missing.

If I boot in safe mode as suggested (please remind me how), tell me
where I should go to see "mouse" & it's driver. If it is in "control
panel\system" as I mentioned above, then this choice is just plain
missing.

Thanks,
Big Mac

Safe Mode *does* matter. Easy way to get there is to Enable Startup Menu in
Advanced section of System Configuration Utility (use the Start=>Run box to
run MSCONFIG). This will bring up the Startup Menu at each boot, whence you
can choose Safe Mode. (You can disable the Startup Menu when you no longer
need it.)

Safe Mode Device Manager shows you all of the devices that are installed.
Normal Mode Device Manager only shows you those that got loaded during the
last startup. If a device has been installed but fails to load, for whatever
reason, the way to remedy that situation is to Remove it in safe Mode and
then let Windows re-detect it.
