View Full Version : Scan Disc - keeps restarting

I am having trouble using scan disc. I am trying to run a thorough scan and
keep getting the message that something keeps accessing windows, making it
restart repeatedly. I have tried closing all programs (used control-alt-del
to end all tasks except internet explorer and system tray). I have tried
running it in safe mode but still have the same problem.

(Dell Pentium 4 - 256ram. Windows Me 4.90.3000)

Disconnect all external links (cable modem, NIC, etc) and try again

Thanks, but I guess I should have mentioned that I have done that. Printer
is turned off, scanner and cable modem disconnected - didn't resolve
problem. Thanks for trying though.

Try further. Run it in SafeMode, temporarily.

Or go to "Run," type in "msconfig" and remove everything from "startup" that doesn't really need to start up.

That's intended as a short-term measure only - for troubleshooting
purposes - not a long-term cure.

sorry, didn't notice in your original post where you mentioned it
wouldn't work in SafeMode.

Boot from a WinME floppy disk and run Scandisk in DOS.

The thing here is we're trying to get the disk error corrected so you
can run it in Normal mode next time.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I had previously tried running it in safe mode, however, decided to give it
another try.
It worked this time :)
Took 18 hours :(

This is the second time I have used this newsgroup - found all the help I
needed both times. Thanks all.

That's a long time.

You'll want to change the Scandisk settings from "Thorough" to "Normal";
it should only take a couple minutes now, at most.

There's a wonderful program written by some of the MVP's to manage and
automate DiskCleanup, Scandisk and Defrag. It runs them all in a
restrictive Normal mode (so you get full Windows 32bit disk drivers) but
without any of the startup elements (it manages this on its own).

http://home.earthlink.net/~bblanton2/scandefrag/main.htm
*very* highly recommended.
