My grand-dad plays online games on my computer and he
downloaded a self install program regarding one of these
games. However, the install was in French and I now know
when it asked him if he wanted to replace the newer dll
files with old versions, he clicked OK.

My question is how do I get the newer dll files back
again, not as I know which ones were replaced.

Since you don't know the files involved probably the only way is to use system
restore and to roll the system back to before the game was installed but I
would suggest you do this if it was installed no more than a few days ago.

Hello Mike.

I was not aware gramps did this over 3 weeks ago, however,
I have found the file listing what the install presumably
overwrote, here is just one example from quite a few.

[Bootstrap Files]
,$(WinSysPathSysFile),,,6-1-98 12:00:00
AM,326656,4.21.0.0

So how do I go about finding the original ones so I can
put them back.

That's one file for sure that would not have been overwritten since it is
protected from being overwritten by Win Me's System File Protection mechanism.
To be honest until you post details of the actual problems that you are
experiencing as a result of installing this game including all error messages
I see little point in doing anything.

Hello Mike,

I'm not actually receiving any eror messages or
experiencing any problems. I just presumed I would be in
due course as the dll files are now old ones.

In which case I'd leave well alone. Win Me's System File Protection will have
prevented some 850+ files from being overwritten by inappropriate versions so
if all is going well I'd leave it at that.

Hello Mike,

Many thanks for the advice. The saga of all this is that
the install did not work for poor old gramps, so he is not
now up to date with his mates playing the on line game
(WW2 naval). Apparantly this small install fails for Me
users but is ok for XP and 98.

The install might be failing because it is trying to install an older
incompatible file version and that this is what Win Me's SFP is preventing. I
would suggest you or your father post to a newsgroup or bulletin board that
supports the game in question.
