View Full Version : Floppy assigned "D drive"

After upgrade from 98SE, my floppy is identifed as "D"
drive... still recognised as a floppy. Clicking on "A" in
My Computer or Explorer freezes everything. I cannot
reassign drive letter in Device Manager. I am using a USB
floppy on a Toshiba Portege 3480CT notebook.

Try rebooting to Safe Mode, and removing all Floppy drive from DM there -
Windows will reinstall required drivers on the reboot to normal mode

Thanks Noel, tried your suggestion a few times but the
floppy always reinstalls as D. It seems that there is a
phantom drive occupying A, preventing the real floppy from
installing there. The Performance tab in System
Properties says "Drive A is using MS-DOS compatibility
mode file system".

Drive A: will ALWAYS use compatibility mode - it's hard-coded into the OS,
AFAIK.

We have to determine why your floppy is not being seen as 'drive A:'
Reboot to Safe Mode - open Device Manager....
what's listed under
a) Floppy Disk drive
b) CD/DVD drive
c) HD drive
d) IDE Comptroller

post back with that data, and we may have something to work on.

Since it's a removable device, you may be able to set it to be seen as drive
A: -
in DM, select the drive, and click on Properties, and go to the Settings
tab - if the drive letter assignment isn't greyed out, change the reserved
drive letters to reflect your needs.

Unfortunately, Laptops are always difficult to upgrade, unless the OS is
supplied and supported by the manufacturer, as they use a lot of proprietary
hardware and drivers.

It looks as if this drive is supported by Tosh - look here for the drivers.
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_home.jsp
(go to the Tech Support Center, then enter the model details, and refine the
search to Win ME drivers - select the one for the FDD, and download it. In
stall it, and see if that cures the problem)

Good Luck

'Scuse for jumping in Noel, just a further suggestion, TweakUI may also be
able to 'unlock' a drive letter if difficulty is found in trying to change
it.
