Recently, the word "ALIGNMENT" appears in red in a grey
box as the computer is booting; right after the desktop
first appears. any ideas?

I've no idea as to what might be causing this box to pop up and can find no
similar reports of such a box popping up when the system boots when searching
the various Microsoft newsgroups for all technologies using Google Groups
search. What changes did you make to your system immediately prior to this
problems starting, such as hardware or software installation or upgrade? Have
you checked your system using your preferred antivirus application equipped
with current updated antiviral reference signatures? If this is only a recent
problem have you considered using system restore to roll your system back to
the state it was in before this problems started, provided, of course, that
this was not more than a few days ago?

Are you sure that box comes from a program?
I would say it is a message from your monitor, which is
autoadjusting when the screen mode switches from the BIOS text
mode to full graphical mode for windows.
Consult the manual that came with your monitor.

Only thing I can think of is your Hard Drive is realigning the
read-write heads. Maybe you could run the manufacturer's non-destructive
diagnostic and see if it says anything.
