View Full Version : media player error during set up

June 21st 04, 03:57 AM
I think the trouble started when I got a worm and tried very hard to
erradicate it. After much effort the worm and viruses that
accompanied it were eliminated and I went to the MS updates page and
installed the windows media player update. I didn't notice a problem
at first but then my kids said WinMX stopped working, then the windows
media player quit, kazaa stopped and pretty soon nothing worked quite
right. I also kept getting trojan horse viruses like, downloader
small, and others. I already use avg, i have now added spybot,
cwsshredder, which i discovered through this group, and have been
cleaning up "bugs" like crazy. Still the computer does not work
right.

Over the last weeks I have been reading posts on this group and found
one that helped me to reinstall windows me when i was getting the
VERX.ddl error, Thanks to Mike Maltby. Well I thought that would fix
it...but...things still don't work.

So, I kept reading. I went to the belarc site (thanks again to a post
on this group) and discovered that there was an error in the media
player Windows Media Player
KB837272 (details...)
WM308567 (details...)
WM320920.1 (details...) Reinstall!
WM828026 (details...)
I click on the details and it leads me to a patch site, where I
download the appropriate patch only to have it say I already have it.
rebooting does not change the reinstall notice.

Now I am thinking I want to uninstall ME and reinstall from the CD.
However, I am scared to try, because what if things just get worse? I
am not a computer whiz, I am just good at hunting and pecking and have
been lucky. I only understand maybe a third of the short hand that
people write and next to nothing about the functions of the registry
and editing and finding the ms prompt and then getting things to work
in DOS.

Please someone direct me. Is it safe to uninstall ME? and then
reinstall it? What else will I have to reinstall? Will this restore
the media player? Is there another way to trouble shoot this?

Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

KaZaa is a vehicle for spyware and adware, as well as viruses - I can only
suggest that you begin by uninstalling it, and cleaning your system fully
(no-one can help you if your system is continually getting reinfected by
malware)
You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

Try BHODemon - from http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/bhod/

Download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

Once you've done that, post back, and we'll proceed from there.

Okay, I have done all of the things you suggested and it looks like
it's clean.
cwshredder - clean, spybot - done, stinger - clean, ad-aware - clean,
AVG - clean, and scandisk - no errors. what's next? Tiina

There's also a glaring error on the page - the CD is NEVER drive D: in a
Win ME boot from floppy with CD Support - because the RamDrive gets the D:
letter in preference to the CD

A much better guide is available at

Now we need the detailed error messages that you get when using failing
applications

If KaZaa is still installed - get rid of it!

When I try to use WinMx V3.31 or Windows Media Player the error is as
follows:

"An internal application error has occurred".

there is no other detail message. I am still owndering if a
reinstallation of ME would be helpful?

Thanks Tiina
