View Full Version : Can't install ME

pcgr1
June 16th 04, 04:30 PM
I refomatted my HD and I'm trying to reintall ME. It keeps freezing and I
can't get past 2% on installing. I've rebooted and tried so many times. I
disconnected one cd rom drive cause I thought it was my dvd drive, but it
freezes with my cd-r drive also. How can I install without my dvd drive or
cd-r drive? I don't know how to copy files from the me cd to my hd. Would
that work? What is faulty in my pc?

Thanks,
Pat

Taking the Install CD out and cleaning it thoroughly might help.
If you're using a non-Microsoft CD (ie: licensed by HP or Dell, etc.),
they're built for their specific computer model.

I did clean it, but maybe I need to clean it better. This cd came with my
built pc. What hardware could be faulty so that I can replace it. Or could
it just be windows me. I tried windows 98 and it froze also.

thanks,
Pat

Sounds like you *may* have an 'iffy' CD-ROM drive, but if you want to try to
copy the WinMe CD to you hard drive and try and install it from there,
here's the procedure:-

Put the WinMe CD into the CD-ROM drive and then boot, using the WinMe
Startup (floppy) Disk and select option 2 (With CD support) and make a note
of the letter shown for your CD drive - probably E:

At the A:\> prompt, type the following, pressing 'Return' after each line.
Be certain to type the lines correctly (the correct syntax is very
important) - where 'e' is the letter designated above :-
md c:\w9xflat
xcopy e: c:\w9xflat /e

Now wait whilst it copies *the complete WinMe CD* (400+ Mb) to your C:
drive - it may take 30 minutes or more!!

When it has completed, you should end up with the A:\> prompt again. Now
type :-
c:
cd w9xflat
setup

And all being well, you *should* be able to install a fresh copy of WinMe.
When you've got WinMe up and running again, you can delete the w9xflat
folder if you want/need the space.

HTH and good luck

Mart

Pat, having now read your 'other' posts too, I'm no longer (necessarily)
suspecting an 'iffy' CD-ROM but certainly a hardware issue. Also, again not
too sure if you have an OEM WinMe CD (recovery CD?) or an MS Retail
version. - The copy instructions are intended for an MS Retail CD.

Anyway, see how you get on, as the instructions still *might* work in your
case.

OKay,
I'm able to do the first command, but when I got to do the xcopy command,
it says bad command or file name. are their spaces in between? I've tried
with and without spaces, still says it. Is their xcopy command in this win
me boot up disk? I see the w9xflat on my c drive.

Thanks,
Pat

No - it means that

1) when the PC dies, you have to buy a new operating system for the
replacement PC
2) you may not sell the CD unless accompanied by the PC you got it with.

Well,
This is the cd that accompanied this pc. I can't figure out what I'm
doing wrong as far as copying it.

TIA,
Pat

Pat, I was away from my PC for a while <g> but as Noel implied, the CD may
well be 'machine specific'.

However, not too sure where to start here except to ask if the CD has folder
called \win9x in the root, with all the setting up files and CABs (some 25
of them!) ?
Just trying to ascertain whether you've got a 'recovery CD'.

You appear to have "made directory" (md) called w9xflat on your HD. Is there
anything in it? - see above

NB -
xcopy e: c:\w9xflat /e
has a space between y and e:
a space between e: and c
and a space between t and /e

Also might be worth running scanreg (in Real Mode DOS) on your C: drive
again using the Startup Disk just to confirm there is 'nothing wrong' with
the HD.

Whilst you are in Real Mode DOS (with CD-ROM support) confirm that you are
able to read from your CD. Check that you can see the folders and files.

Okay, I got it copied to the HD, using a different command. I used copy and
didn't use all of the command that that you had said, got it off of a web
page. Anyway, now the monitor goes off when installing and it does it
during or right after scandisk. Does this mean my ati 7500 video card is
bad?

As I said earlier, "Just trying to ascertain whether you've got a 'recovery
CD'." - as opposed to an MS retail or 'standard' OEM CD. So, it would help
if you were to answer my questions.

Please confirm that there is a \win9x folder containing 25 CAB files.

I've no idea why your monitor 'goes off' - I don't know *what* you are
installing, nor exactly what (version of WinMe) you've copied to your HD.

What 'different' command did you use to copy your CD? You may not have
copied ALL of the essential files/folders, for all I know.

How did you run scandisk? - from the boot floppy?

Under the circumstances, as it would appear that you've got an OEM CD of an
(as yet) unspecified version, you may be better checking your User Manual to
see what the OEM suggests.

Mart, he's got an OEM CD (per the post while you were away).

Pat, unless your monitor was turning off unexpectedly in Windows I doubt
it's your vidcard. Check your BIOS for "Monitor Power Save Function" or
somesuch. May as well turn off *any* powersaving functions (sleep
hibernate, etc) while you're in there.

I didn't have that on in the bios. Plus if I move the mouse, it wouldn't
make the monitor come back on. I had all power saving features disabled.
