While tidying up some bits and pieces I noticed two files
in the STARTUP that I am unsure about. They are xgtyx.exe
resident in the Windows directory and userr.exe in
Windows\system directory. Userr runs as an active
program, visible if I Ctl Alt Del.

Can I delete these, are they harmless?

Thanks,

David

I feel you are right to be concerned about both of these entries. I feel that
they are both likely to be launching unwanted malware. What does you AV
application tell you about these two files? The Win Me operating system
includes no files with those names although it does include USER.EXE (that is
with one R) but even so this should not appear in MSConfig | Startup.

Might want to rename them instead to something harmless like xgtyx.old
and userr.old until you're sure they're not application files (xg...
sounds like a Yamaha softsynth file)

Anri virus has no prob with them. Today I can't find the
XG file, and have renamed userr.exe to .old, with no
detrimental impact.

Thanks
