Hello - please help me. I got a direct hit on Microsoft's
site in reference to the above issue but still can't get
into windows ME - even in safe mode.

When I power on the computer I get this message, "error
loading explorer.exe you must reinstall windows." I tried
to extract the explorer.exe file from the restoration disk
and power the computer back up - but that didn't work.
Same error message.

The tech folks at gateway walked my through syster restore
but that didn't work. Same error message.

So, is there any other suggestions and if I have to
reinstall windows ME would I lose all my programs and
saved files. Any way of reinstalling windows me without
losing anything? It seems that some folks say that if you
reinstall windows you will not lose everything other folks
say you will - who is right?

Or do I have to take out my hard drive and put that hard
drive into another computer and back up the files than put
the hard drive back into my computer and reinstall windows?

Thanks!

The same thing happened to me on 6/5 after downloading
Microsoft Secutity patches. I was unable to restart after
spending an hour with a Dell support person.

Bad news I lost all files from the last back up which
unfortunately was a whilde back. A lesson learned.

Good luck!!

If you do the reinstall the right way, there's no reason you should lose
either data or programs.
