Hello Mart,

I followed the following instructions:

I booted from my floppy Startup disk and selected CDROM
support.
I looked for the (temporary) drive letter(s) allocated to
the CDROM(s). There was a lot of information identifying
copyright holders and finally I saw that Windows was to be
started.

Before I was offered the A:\ prompt I read this seemingly
pertinent information:

1. Diagnostic tools successfully loaded to drive G. (and)
2. Drive H = DriverMSCD001 unit 0 (and)
3. Drive I = DriverMSCD001 unit 1 (and the last thing
before the A:\ prompt was)
4. Your CDROM is drive H.

I do not know which are the (temporary) drive letters.

What's happening? It all seems so contradictory to me.

Hope you can help. Thanks, Mart.
Ben.

"Temporary" in the respect that after you reboot the Windows GUI, it
should return to it's usual drive letter. This is something that
confuses alot of people: "Arrgh my CD disappears when I boot from a
floppy", etc.

You've now got a G: RAMdrive (sits in memory and looks like a disk
drive, keeps you from having to access the floppy for programs that are
in it, really useful sometimes)

Your CD is H: until you get back to the GUI where it will probably be G:
again, and..

The CDR or DVD part of your CD drive is I: (in this case "I" for "Ignore
It")

Rick & Noel, cheers for chipping in Chaps. I got side-lined for the past
couple of hours - Needed to lie down in a darkened room <g>

Ben - Under the circumstances - unless anyone NEEDS to continue on the
original thread - which has now nudged so far to the right of my screen,
I'll have to connect a second monitor <g> - perhaps we should continue on
this thread.

I think Rick has explained - in his inimitable style - why your CD-ROM is
(likely) to be H: for the moment. Thus, if you hadn't already worked it out
by now, the commands you need at the A:\> prompt are:-
H: (Enter) (Note the colon following the letter H

H:\> type setup then Return

But it's bed-time again in the UK - will pick-up again tomorrow - for the
good news??

Mart

Hello Stalwarts,

Here it is.

I bootup with my four year old EBD.
At the prompt I select CDROM support.
I note that drive is H
I also note that the diagnostic tools are loaded to drive G
I decide to use my H drive.
At the A:\ prompt I type in H: and press enter.
At the H:\> prompt I type setup. and nothing happens so I
insert the forgotten CD into H. and ask for a Retry r
or/and an f for Fail. And so on and nothing. I switch the
CD to G and ask for a retry. And lo and behold Scandisk
and then - well you know what. I did this over and over.
Whether I choose G or H is of absolutely no consequence -
but that CD has to be in G.
I believe, and await correction, that the key to where the
CD is entered , is to which drive are the diagnostic tools
loaded.

Piece of cake - yup.
Thanks guys.
Ben.

umm... (sure glad you don't have more partitions, I'd have run out of
fingers...)

Your G: drive on an EBD boot is that RAMdrive thing, not your CD.

Next time put the CD in *before* you switch to drive H:

Not sure how Scandisk got involved... do I need to know ?

Hello Rick,

I followed your suggestion and inserted my WinMe CD into
my H drive when the A:\> prompt appeared. Then I typed H:
At the H:\>I typed in 'setup' and this next appeared:
"CDR101: Not reading reading drive H. Abort etc etc."

What next?

Ben.

Shoulda worked if you used the CD Support option on the EBD ... I: drive
same thing?

Ben, first off, I should have said that you need to put the WinMe CD into
the drive BEFORE you tried to run setup, but I'm sure I said that in an
earlier post.

Yup! - > ..."Decide which you are going to use and insert the WinMe CD."

However, as you've got TWO CD-ROM drives, then *perhaps* the other is the H
and you actually put the WinMe CD into the I drive?? Try it in the other
drive.

NB - Remember, by booting with the EBD, some drive letters are moved-on due
the temporary 'creation' of the RAM disk - which (usually) assumes the
letter D - but that letter will be advised on-screen during the boot
process.

Rick, in spite of our previous posts, I'm not too sure here (very long
history!) but was the 'quality' of Bens WinMe CD ever in question? - It
*might* also have given the same report if 'bad' of course. But let's assume
the CD is 'good' <g>

Hello Rick,

I had tried 'I' before and knew it didn't work so the
answer is no.

I have just completed a second (lately <g>) re-install of
WinMe - in DOS with CDROM support and with my CD inserted
in drive G. it stayed in DOS until Windows was loaded,
thereafter I had the full colour version through to
completion. Looking good.

Hello Rick (and Mart),

Just to be sure I went back into DOS with CDROM support
and selected 'I' drive at the A:\> with the WinMe CD
inserted. At the I:\> I typed setup and the response was:
CDR101: Not ready reading drive I. Abort etc.

And Mart, there is not much wrong with me WinCD save to
say it's envelope is badly frayed <bg>.

Thanks to you each.

Ben, the first part of your (latest) response doesn't make sense because the
previous part - directed to Rick, does!! I guess you *may* have pasted the
wrong words <g>

You (also) wrote:-

So, as you have now, at long last, got it to be recognised in the H: drive,
it begs the question as to why it didn't see it the first time if the CD is
OK - a 'flaky' CD-ROM drive perhaps?

How old is your kit? A flaky CD-ROM after 3yrs is certainly not unheard
of.
