View Full Version : windows rebooting

Working on an IBM pc that appeared to have a virus. Many
zip files at startup and upper left corner small windows
that appeared to be running diagnostics. Before anything
could be done it would reboot and do the same thing.
I tried to reinstall from the product recovery partition.
It proceeds normally until the ME edition setup box
appars. It goes through control panel, programs on start
menu, etc until it gets to IBM customization. This says
currently installing 9 of 22 and the system reboots. It
appears to be installing fixes to ME that have been
downloaded before. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Reinstalling ME is NOT going to remove/fix a virus!!!

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:

http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

I am not just reinstalling ME. This is a complete install
from a product recovery patition and should be just like
the original as delivered. I have both programs but ME is
not far enough along to do anything. I can only come up
in DOS mode. Are there copies of these programs that will
run under DOS?

The chances are that your backup partition is also infected with the virus,
if the infection was that bad.
Never try to reinstall an infected system in this way- you're almost
guaranteed to have problems!

Probably the best DOS AV scanner is F-Prot from www.f-prot.com - download
and create the boot disks on a known-clean machine, then use them to boot
the infected system and scan it.
