View Full Version : System Updating Files - NOT

I have tried to install an ADSL kit on an upgraded version of ME

The installation was going OK and then the computer restarted, when it
restarts I get the box up that the system is upgrading the information or
something to that effect and that is where it stops, task manager shows that
it is not responding and the only other thing in Task Manager is something
like cmdinst.

I can get into Safe mode but I can't do anything to stop the problem. Some
fool turned System restore off so I can't use that.

Can anyone help me out please so I can get his computer going again for him.

Thanks.

Joe,

" Cmdninst.exe is the Configuration Manager Device Installer
launcher. Along with the Windows Configuration Manager (Configmg),
Cmdninst.exe is a component that drives the process of detecting and
installing devices and their nodes in the hardware tree along with
the allocation of resources. "

It appears that a driver for the ADSL modem is not compatible with
ME . See if you can go to the manufacturer's website on another PC
and get the driver. If you can, boot to Safe Mode and install it
from there.
Unless you can obtain a driver that is compatible with ME then you
will have to boot to Safe Mode and uninstall the modem from Device
Manager.

Thanks Mow,

Safe mode is the only way I can get into Windows, there is nothing showing
in Device Manager or Add/Remove programs and when in safe mode the CD drive
is not showing in the windows tree nor will if run a CD, when one is
inserted it can be heard starting up but that's as far as it goes.

Have you been running with the Quack?
Are you running Norton System Quack - - errr - Doctor?
If so, then read on......

You may have up to 32,000 empty OEM*.INF files sitting in your
c:\Windows\INF folder, which prevents any program putting a legitimate *.INF
file in there (it also slow your system down to stop, trying to read them
and sort the [non-existent] contents!).
You need to DELETE all 0byte (and ONLY the 0byte) OEM*.INF files.
look here for information on how to do that , and how to prevent it
happening again (i.e. TURN OFF NORTON SYSTEM DOCTOR - unless you are
actively troubleshooting something)

The Symantec site:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nunt.nsf/docid/2000120915010309&src=n

also
"Computer Stops Responding (Hangs) During Setup, Installing Updates, or
Adding New Hardware"
also
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q301540
(which contains the fix for your problem in the NOTE under the patch
description)
Phone your Local MS office, and tell them your problem quoting Q301540 -
they'll either send you the patch, or give you a one-use password, for the
cost of the call.

Good Luck

Thanks Noel,

He doesn't have Norton's, he is using Vet, but all those OEM files were
there. We got it installed and working but then it stopped, personally I
think it is a modem problem so the Professionals can have a look at it.

Thanks for the feedback, Joe - glad that bit's sorted, anyhow....
FWIW, NSD is not part of NAV - but part of Norton System Suite or Norton
Utilities

Good Luck
